30-06 Volunteer Needed
« on: February 23, 2013, 01:20:20 PM »
I have some 7x65R brass that sizes nicely when run through a standard 30-06 sizing die. Jeepmann1948 has offered to cut a rim counterbore and modify the extractor or ejector to fit the rimmed case. Now all we need is a volunteer who wants their 30-06 barrel converted. I'll throw in 50 brass; sized, trimmed, neck annealed. Or virgin brass, your choice.

So any volunteers? Beware though, a range report will be required. ;D

Well actually two range reports are required; one before and one after to show whether the mod made any changes in accuracy potential.

Thanks, Dinny

would you still be able to fire .30-06 in this one like the .307/.308 or .36/.358 ? that would be cool.

George would have to answer that, he's doing the work. I know he was able to do that in the past with a 358/356 mod.

Thanks, Dinny

Jason,
$15 for return shipping, two range reports and you get the mods done and some brass to start off with. The brass alone is worth nearly $50. 8)

Are you game?

The 7X65R rim diameter is .524
The 30-06  rim diameter is .473
The difference in rim diameter .051

The 307 Win rim diameter is .506
The 308 Win rim diameter is  .473
The difference in rim diameter is  .033

The rim cut will be .008 deep x .526 in diameter

With careful fitting of the Ejector /Extractor cases Should interchange.
Maximum Loads  should be approached very carefully. I would also recommend caring a 3/16" brass welding rod to the range for  load testing.(just in case :D )
I will need the barrel and the matching receiver for the modification and at least (5) 7X65R cases.I have plenty of stocks and forearms so don't send them and take a chance on shipping messing them up.

And Doc I agree on the rims on them automobiles too ;D

Larry did this for me several years ago. Took it to the range and put a couple of boxes of  ammo thru it. Nothing really changed except it can be fired with  rimmed  ammo. Accuracy did not change. Put it away for other toys.
The only concern I might have is how the 7x 65 brass will hold up on repeated loadings,as the brass must stretch several thou. upon inital firing. At this point it still looks fine.  I do plan to hunt with it this fall as I will be hunting where the shots will be longer than in past years. The 356 handi will get its turn in the safe.
Larry has also done this to  the 7mm/08, 308 Win and Wayne york did the 357 to 356 Win. rechamber
Can someone help me come up with a parent case for a rimmed 223? Best, G66

Thanks Gunther,
Case life was / is one of my concerns.Using it as a hunting rifle, brass should  have acceptably long life, unless hot loads are used.
A  rimmed 223 could be made from the 5.6 X 50R Magnum. However for the amount of reforming and the cost of brass, and the small amount of gain , I personally would not mess with it.
As not to highjack this thread ,I am posting a new topic

If anyone wants a rim cut I will be glad to do it

Brass life should not be an issue.  After an inital sizing, you are only sizing back to 'sized 30-06' for a base line and 'fired 30-06' after use.  You would not be working the brass any more than any 30-06 brass would be.  I can't see as accuracy would change, what the rifle likes, it likes.  The advantage would only be more positive extraction, maybe.  I don't own a 30-06 barrel yet, if I did, it would already be on the way to you just for the fun of it.  However my 7-08 as a 'rimless' case has never had any issues with extraction or ejection (I've owrned both), so H&R seems to have their extractors working very well indeed.  Personally, I can't see where a rim is needed, but it would still be fun to try.  I've often wondered why they didn't offer the rimmed Marlin rounds when Marlin owned H&R.  It will be interesting to see what happens, or how long it may take to find a load that the rifle likes in the rimmed brass, or if good loads in the '06 will transfer right over and work the same with the rimmed.  44 Man
By the way, what base brass do you use for a '7-08' rimmed case?

Be careful necking down brass usually requires trimming to length and turning necks to the correct thickness. Necking up usually does not present these problems. Most of the time the necks are actually short of standard.

I made arrangements to have the barrel sent to me for a range report. Rather than lose it all here, I'll start a new topic after I git 'er done. ;)

I was gonna put in on the classifieds, but haven't gotten around to it.
I think watching someone experiement with it will be more enjoyable.
