Trap too easy?
« on: October 06, 2006, 04:22:32 AM »
I just can't get into trap. It's just too easy. I hit most of the birds and then make it harder on myself by turning my back to the trap house, yelling "pull", then turing and shooting the bird. I suppose I'd like international trap better because it seems more complex. And I like skeet a lot, so long as I am starting from a position I would expect to be in when hunting.

Anybody else turned off by trap?

Try backing up to the 27 yard line, it won't be so easy. We used to shoot a five shot winner take all money game from 37 yards behind the trap at my range back when I owned a trap and skeet range. Now that will add some challenge to it for you.

Of course the best Trap shooters go 200 straight, then shoot 200-300 more in tie breaker rounds.   If you shoot in a squad with some of the top shooters, it won't seem quite so easy.  Good in Trap means darn near perfect.  It's like shooting a 300 relay in Bullseye.

I believe the scores in most all shooting disciplines are going up these days. Back when I quit competition there were less than a handful of folks who had EVER shot a perfect 100 of 100 with the little .410 in competition. These days it's actually quite common for folks to win with such scores. The same for 400x400 in four gun matches. Not many times had it ever been done when I gave up the game. Now it seems almost the norm.

When I stopped competing the .410 was by far my worse gun and my scores with it were several targets behind the other guns. In fact I was two classes down with it from the others. Today I'm shooting it as well as I do any gun. In fact my last time out I fired 50 rounds with my 28 and 50 with the .410 and missed precisely half as many with the .410 as with the 28 and it has always been my favorite and my scores have historically reflected that.

In silhouette the long runs and winning scores seem to just keep climbing as well. Folks are sure knocking over more than we did back when I did that too.
