Load for 45/70 using IMR 4227 for HANDI rifle
« on: October 02, 2006, 01:07:16 PM »
Hello, I have a 45/70 NEF handi rifle and a Lee loader for 45/70. My question is it list a load using 40.3 grs. IMR 4227 for bullet weights of 350 to 450 grs. ,will this rifle handle this load . I have IMR 4227, IMR 3031, and Varget. Would like to use 4227 , a faster burning powder. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't see a load that warm for IMR4227 with bullets over 330gr, Steve's pages shows 25-34gr for 350gr bullets and 25-35gr for 405gr bullets and none for 500gr bullets. The Nosler 5th book only shows 300gr loads for IMR4227. The Lyman 48th shows 31-34.5gr for 400gr cast bullets in their levergun data and 39.8-44grs with their 330gr 457122HP cast bullet in the Ruger data which is conservative at a max of 38.8kcup, well within the Handi's capabilities. I would highly recommend that you stick with current published data using start data for levergun loads and work up. What works in one rifle may not be safe in another of identical make, getting into low ruger level loads may be safe in some Handis, but not others. I don't have an IMR booklet yet, but they show no .45-70 data for IMR4227 online, neither does Hodgdon for H4227, FWIW. In my opinion, I would stick with the IMR3031 or Varget as they are a couple of the recommended powders for the .45-70 bullets in the range you want to shoot. I would also recommend that you check in with the NEF/H&R Centerfire forum here, lots of .45-70 Handi/BC shooters there!

Having shot a lot of IMr4227, 3031 and 4198 thru my Marlin 1895 my feelings are 3031 is only good for max loadings and heavy bullets as it is slow enough to leave a lot of unburned powder in the bore otherwise. Best compromise is IMR 4198 but I like IMR 4227 for moderate loadings. 32.0 grains of it under a 405 Remington bullet gives 1500 fps and I like to use a magnum primer with ball powders. This loading leaves the bore clean and gives very good accuracy. I have used it with the 300 grain HP"s also with good results.

" Steve's pages shows 35-37gr for 350gr bullets and 34-36gr for 405gr bullets and none for 500gr bullets."

Those loads are for H-4227, not IMR-4227.  In addition, I would use the lower loads in the Handi.  It ain't the strongest action around...

Correction made to the 405gr data, thx.

It's not the weakest, either. H&R says Marlin loads are fine, myself and many others shoot top Marlin loads in their .45-70 Handi/BCs with no problems other than brutal recoil. :o The '99 and later frames** are considerably stronger than older frames, H&R won't fit any high pressure rounds such as the .270W or .308W to frames older than '99, but the Handi is factory available in .500S&W which operates at pressures close to  that of the Ruger load level of the .45-70, depending on the source of data, see Hodgdon's Annual manual for a pressure comparison. ;)

Send me running if I get out here to far, but isn't rifles built to a specific CUP class?  Am I mistaken that most all rifles are built these days to like a 50,000 CUP rating?

quickdtoo,What do you consider a hot 1895 45-70 load that you would load for your H&R or NEF 45-70?

IMR 4227
This is "the" magnum pistol powder in the IMR lineup. If it says magnum, IMR 4227 is the choice for true magnum velocities and performance. In rifle, this powder delivers excellent velocity and accuracy in such cartridges as the 22 Hornet and 221 Fireball.

Here's a thread from the NEF/H&R Centerfire forum that relates to this topic.
