Go to Wally World & buy a can of Formby's Furniure Refinisher, a small can of Min-Wax Stain/Sealer in Red Mahogany, another in Dark Walnut, and some OOOO steel wool.
A final finish of Tru-Oil is EZ, also.
Folowing the Formby's directions, use a saturated OOOO steel wool pad to remove all the stock finish - and let it dry overnite.
Mix some Red Mahogany & Walnut stain together (50/50) and soak the stock, using a cloth or felt pad. The walnut stain will darken the wood and the mahogany will give it a slight reddish tint - that "Winchester Red" , so many admire. Let the stain dry again, overnite.

To apply the Tru-Oil, dip one fingertip into the oil, and dab that quarter-sized drop on the stock.
Start rubbing it in with the same fingertip, expanding the rubbed area to about the size of a dollar bill - until the oil starts to get tacky (you will feel/hear the fingertip "squeak").
When that area's done, immediately start in with one more fingertip drop, right next to where you left off (at the "wet" edge) and repeat as needed until the entire stock has one coat. Let it dry overnite- no matter what the instructions say.
The next day, rub off all the visible oil off the stock, using a new pad of the OOOO steel wool, wipe down afterward with a tack rag and a magnet - and start the second coat of Tru-oil.
Continue applying one coat of oil, then cutting it back after drying overnite, until the finish is what you're looking for.
For a shinier finish, do not rub out the last coat of oil - just apply a coat of a good automotive paste wax ( not polish, which is an abrasive !).
For a "satin" finish, lightly rub out the final oil coat, and wax as above.
