To Mac and Quick.
Well it's not a Handi, but I just blew my gun savings on a new A&B barrel from Midway for the Savage. You guessed it, a 24" 338-06. It has 1-10 twist so it should handle just about any 338 bullet. I want you guys to know this is all your fault.
I'll still need to get headspace guages and a new barrel nut, reloading dies and bullets, Jeez, I can see the dollars adding up again.
Oh, well, the barrel was only $129 and they were down to 3 left and it took several months the last time they ran out, before they restocked. VERY good reviews of that barrel.
Really went back and forth for a long time on the 338 vs 35 Whelen, and in the end, bullet choice won out. Right or wrong, it's in play now.
I have plans on getting a Laminated stock (for weight and looks) and a decent scope for this rifle, it will be my "custom" Savage. I just finished converting my 223 Savage to 243 and got a 1" 3 shot group with Federal poershock 100gr right off the bat. Only took 10 shots (counting the 3 shot group) to get the scope from the POI of the 223 to 1.5" high at 100 in 243.
I hope the 338 conversion goes as well. It will be another month or so before I can do the conversion, but I wanted the barrel here and waiting. I am now offocially "off the caliber fence"
.
I'll let you guys know the results when I get to that point.
Thanks for ALL your input and feedback.
