160 year old civil war ammo explodes
« on: July 25, 2006, 12:20:06 PM »
A whitfield county GA collector had a 20 lb shell explode while removing the gun powder.

Seems these rounds bring about $500 a piece.

I guess that answers the question how long gun powder will last huh?

And now the latest spin.....from the local TV news......tonight.......

Seems elements of the US Army's bomb disposal unit removed most of this mans collection valued at $200,000.00 and destroyed it......much to the anger of his friends and family.

There was no report on what or who's authority they acted.

What ever happened to liberty?

I remember when I was  A kid
we found a Fuzed Cannon shell in the creek By the house.
I lived between the Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield
and Atlanta then. And we were always finding relics.
They didn't really have Bomb Disposal units back then.
So the Police called a fella in the army ordinance Dept.
He destroyed it in place. He said it was far too
dangerous to try and disarm these old devices. and that is why they
destroyed it.

that is a long time to set a detonator to go off.
