new 45-70 ?

Picked up a 22" 45-70 handi yesterday at Sportsmans. ;D Everyone here made me think i need one fore some reason ::)
But anyway my ? has anyone tried the lazer cast 405g rnfp. If so how did they shoot for you? What powder do you guys prefer with the 45-70? I am going to use it on a cow elk hunt in November. Do you think i should use jacketed bullets instead? I have never shot a 45-70.

My favorite powder for the 45-70 is H4198...and I much prefere the Nosler 300 grain partitions to anything else...Lot's of guys over at Marlin Owners use the Northforks and swear by them...Niether are what you can call in-expensive...both both are top performers in the field and have taken many elk...The partitions loaded to 2350-2400 fps should work wonders for you,provided you are ready for the recoil..this loading isn't for the meak nor or they trapdoor loads.....I haven't used the Lazer cast bullets...but have used the cast performance 405gr WLNGC bullets...they are very accurate and don't lead up the bore even driven to 2000fps..Lots of folks say you can eat right up to the hole with cast bullets...I don't know...I prefer the bullet to expand and still hold together when it passes completely thru...You'll just have to load some up and try it...I'm quite sure you'll be amazed at the results with the 45-70..It's one of the best NEF offers.If your wanting to try the Nosler Partitions...Cabela's have them on sale right now for $30.00 a box..Don't ty to load the non-gaschecked bullets to fast...they will lead up the bore...and PS...Congrats on the new NEF...

Another 45-70er.Your gonna love it.  I just ordered 100 of the cast performance 405's  with gas checks myself. I'm going to start with a load of 50 grns of 3031 and see how they shoot . I,ll let you know.

thanks I hope i like. I ordered the LC because of the price and i shoot them in my 44's. They say even without gaschecks they are good for jacked velocities. I am going to start light to get an idea of how it shoots as i have never shot one. Was thinking unique or trail boss to start then work up to the big boy loads.

Those are some impressive numbers! I've shot LC in my .357 because they're cheap, and have only had them spit lead using the hottest loads of 2400. I also tried the "hammer test" and they don't fracture -- just pancake and stay super-hot for a while after you hit them. Pretty tough bullets.

I use the the LC 405's for my plinking rounds and they are very accurate. However, my BC has the microgroove barrel and I can't push lead bullets past 1300fps without accuracy loss. A gas checked or jacketed bullet solves the problem. Does the 22" barrel have conventional grooves?

Not sure what kind of rifling it has didnt realy look, but it does have an ejector ;D

I hope enjoy your 45/70 as much as I do mine.  So far I have only shot trapdoor loads using Rem. 300HP and 405SP using RE #7.  I find them to be very accurate and pleasant to shoot.  I have used Laser Cast in my .44 and 357 but not yet the 45/70.
