I can sure understand the AK being number one, but number two sucks as a combat gun. I guess the reason it rated so high is because so many were made and distributed to several other countries. It didn't take long in Vietnam for the troops to figure out that it was a very ineffective combat weapon, and it does not appeal to the combat troops in Iraq where it has proven to less effective than in Nam.
The little black gun was OK when the enemy was in the open, but the slightest bit of cover and it was garbage. During my first tour in Nam many of us traded the M16 for an AK. The second tour that was the first thing I did, turned the M16 in to the armory, and picked up a battlefield AK. I still remember a young shave tail asking about the AK, "where do you get ammo for the gun?" I told him the VC carried the ammo for me, just take it off a dead commie. He thought I was crazy, but after a few months in the field he picked up one for himself.
