Laptop Battery Recall
« on: August 17, 2006, 06:41:34 PM »
Dell Battery Recall.

I have two batteries for my Dell Laptop computer.  Without a doubt it is my mobile mapping library.  I am always concerned about fire, and I sure would not want to burn my home or pickup at the same time.

I went to the Dell Battery Program web page and check the model numbers for the two batteries that I have for my laptop.  The site makes it rather easy to determine if your battery is subject to the recall.  It takes you to a page with a number of blocks in which you enter your battery number.  At the time my wife purchased the laptop for me she ordered a more powerful second battery.  The original equipment battery showed up as being one of those subject to the recall.  After the page showed that one was subject to the recall it moved me to an order page.  On the order page I filled out the name and address boxes.  After I submitted the information Battery Recall Order Confirmation page came up with a Battery Recall Request Number XXXXX.  I printed that page for my records.  A very friendly process.  I’ll have to call baby brother tomarrow and see if he has checked out his laptop battery.

The batteries were made for Dell by Sony.  If you have a HP or Apple laptop you may want to check their sites for battery information.

The replacement battery was delivered on August 22.  That was approximately five days after I had filled out the form and submitted it on the Dell site.  In addition to the battery there was a postage paid mailing label, and large unprinted label to reseal the box after placing the old battery in it.  I dropped that off at the post office this evening.  Outstanding service from Dell. :)

Today's Sacramento Bee had an article regarding Apple now recalling batteries.  The Apple and Dell batteries are made by Sony.

It appears that Sony manufactures batteries for the major laptop brands.  This recall business continues to grow from Dell, to HP, and others including my granddaughters Sony laptop.  If you own a laptop go to the manufactures website and find out if your battery has been recalled.  Dell handled the problem in a very forth right manner.
