17vs22caliber

Not being familiar with the 17 cal rimfire cartridge, I was wondering what one has more velocity? The 17 or the 22 long rifle? Which one has more knock down power? Is the 22 mag more powerful than these 2 cartriges? Curious minds would like to know. ???

A question sure to start an arguement.  17 HMR has more velocity than 22Mag and tends to be made with better bullets than most .22mag ammo.  It has a flat trajectory out a long way and at distances over 100 yards it is far easier to shoot accurately in my opinion.  .22 mag has more punch at shorter ranges with its heavier slug.  The .22 is less affected by wind, but both are moved around by the wind.  The .22 mag and the 17HMR are really hard on game like squirels at short ranges.  Neither are made for large game, contrary to some folk's beliefs.

22LR and 17M2 are about the same comparison, but for shorter ranges.  Many people including me use a .22 for under 75 yards.  The Mach 2 takes it out to 100.  The LR has more punch in the range it was made for, etc.

I have guns in all four chamberings, and all have uses.  There is no one size that fits all.  I do shoot far more .22 long rifle than all other bullets put together.

I would have to go along with this post for the most part.  Saved me a lot of typing.   :)

.22 Lr standard velocity runs anywhere between 1100 and 1300  with 38- 40 grain bullet
.17 Mach 2 is advertised at 1850  for a 17 grain bullet

.22 Mag is around 1900 with a 40 grain bullet A little higher as bullets get lighter.
.17 HMR is advertised at about 2500 with a .17 grain bullet.
(I dont think it is quite that high, but fast none the less)

within their own reasonable ranges, all are about the same accuracy wise.

.22 LR is still BY FAR the most economical and therefore still probably
has a 10,000 to 1(or higher) lead on the number fired each year. My personal favorite is
the .17 Mach2, But I still shoot many more .22 LR's.
