snaring muskrats?
« on: October 04, 2006, 01:07:08 PM »
Started trapping last fall, mostly land sets with foot hold and cable restraints. Had a good season catching 6 greys, 1 red,3 yotes and 10 coons. This fall I going to try my hand at water sets for muskrats. I'm going to try useing floats with foot holds, 110 in there runs and sprinkle in a few stoploss #1. I was looking at my snare catalog, and saw that they sell snares for muskrsts. Has any one used snares for rats? If so how did they work? Also are they a one shot deal like my cable restraints that get kinked up from being chewed and twisted? Thanks

Most times, snares are a one shot deal. The cable gets twisted .
I don't snare my rats, most are taken with #1 stoploss.I get quite a few coon, mink and beaver in my rat sets.If I went to anything but the footholds,it would all but eliminate those extra coon and beaver. And I don't want to do that.

I've never done this, and I suppose just like any animal they could be snared, but then again who would want to? They are so thin skinned anyway, and you sell this hide skin side out. Wouldn't it leave a little burn mark or tear on the hide as it does with beaver or coon anyway?
