I was out of the building this day (Tuesday this week) but someone screwed up.
Gun left in courthouse bathroom
Leader-Telegram Staff
A man visiting the Eau Claire County Courthouse Wednesday morning found a gun in a second floor restroom.
The handgun belonged to a reserve deputy with the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Department, Capt. John Vogler said.
The man who found the gun turned it in at the district attorney’s office.
Court security officials were called to the district attorney’s office and determined the gun belonged to Chuck Halbleib, who was working as a plainclothes bailiff.
Vogler called the incident a serious security breach.
The incident will be addressed as a personnel matter after an internal inquiry and review of Sheriff’s Department policies, Vogler said.
Halbleib has been a reserve deputy since April.
