Remmy 750 Off-hand Shooting Technique
« on: September 28, 2006, 04:14:20 PM »
Having difficulty shooting my new 750 .308 off- hand. I can hit a paper plate(about 10 inches in dia.) 50% of the time at 100 yards. Any suggestions on technique that will help improve my %. Last Sunday I watched a fellow member of the rifle club I belong to put 9 out of 10 shots into a circle half the size of my paper plates at 200 yards. If I had not seen it for myself thru the spotting scope I would not have believed it possible!!!!

I plan to purchase one or two of those 'plastic' rounds and do some dry firing practise but are there ant tricks to off-hand shooting that could help???

Thanks

This is a good topic.  The late Jeff Cooper said shooting from the bench was a test of equipment.  Shooting freehand was a test of marksmanship.

I practice quite a bit at off hand shooting from several positions.  I can hit a milk jug at 100 yards about 8 out of 10 times........doesnt' seem to matter if it's scoped or iron sights.......

I'd suggest a .22lr to start, and just bounce a few cans........

The biggest thing, is to keep practicing......

Try using a sling to help steady you. They're inexpensive and really help. If you were in the military it won't be foreign to you. If not the range officer where you shoot can help you.   ;)

At my best (several years ago) I could hit 3 of 5, 10 oz pop cans at 80 yds (rapid fire) with my Rem 742 in 30-06 and open sights.

Once I sighted in my rifle from the bags, I stopped shooting at conventional targets and concentric circles.

I would start with a target sized piece of paper (or a target turned over), and start from an "at rest" position.  I would throw the rifle to my shoulder and fire as soon as my sights crossed the paper.  After a lot of practice, I would get so I could consistently hit the paper.

I'd then switch to sheets of 8 1/2 X 11 paper and fine tune my shooting 'till I was consistently hitting the smaller sheet.

Later, I would put 3 or 4 pieces of paper on my backstop, and practice "follow-up" shots, rapid firing after my initial shot.

Once I could successfully do this, I would "team up" with another shooter and put up a half dozen or so sheets at different heights.  We would agree on a "number" for each target, and one of us would call out a number sequence and the other would shoot at those targets.

In subsequent years, I would short cut this process when I could.  During this period I became an excellent off-hand snap shooter on deer and moose.

Buy a sling and a scoped 10/22.

There's nothing like practice.

I just read a December '06 Shooting Times article recounting that their test 750 had a 10lb creepy trigger.  That will affect offhand shooting, just a bit.   ;)

My trigger has creep in it too. It doesn't bother me particularly and the pull is 5-6 pounds. Practice is the answer. And more practice. Dry fire and the real thing!!!

Practice, practice, practice, if you want to have some fun take an old tire off the rim fill the center with cardboard cutouts and have someone roll it or roll it yourself it will soon enouigh turn to the right or left and see if you can hit the cardboard. And if hunting season is just around the corner buy a walking stick that also turns into a shooting stick , they work great

I never shoot from a bench except to sight in and then i shoot off hand at white tail targets.  Remember there are no benches in the deer woods or bulleye tagets :) I do a lot of dry firing at home and this really helps.  You need to build up your muscle memory.  Good luck
