Triple 7 powder - FFG or FFFG?
« on: October 24, 2006, 03:55:25 AM »
I have a .50 cal T/C Omega and shoot Hornady 240 gr XTP mag bullets and sabots with CCI 209M primers.
For hunting, I load 120gr. of 777 FFG and have three quick loaders in my pocket with three 777 pellets in each.
I can quickly shoot all four of these loads without cleaning the bore and put all four shots close to the bullseye at 50 yards.
I have not had the crud ring problem others have had and I am happy with the power and accuracy of these loads.

But then a friend comes up and says he found something "better" - don't you hate that - because you know you at least have to give this new thing a try.  He says 777 FFFG works better in his rifle than 777 FFG.

My question is:  Have any of you compared 777 FFG and 777 FFFG in your rifles, and which did you prefer and why?

Thanks for your feedback!

I prefer the FFG, it is more common and easier to find that the FFFG. Also I get great accuracy with the FFG and see not need to try to improve any more than I have already. Sounds like you have a great set up now, why change?  ;)

FFFg will burn faster which is, I think, an advantage with short barrels (pistols). Slower burning FFg is better for rifles and shotguns as the longer burning time builds up a longer, flatter pressure pulse which is effective further along inside the barrel. This takes better advantage of the longer barrel on a rifle. Although, to be honest, I'm not sure you could really consistently measure the difference except with some high quality (dollar) chronograph instrumentation...

My Encore likes fffg . I let the ML decide. Other than grouping I have found the finer powdre often produces less of a crud ring.
keep your powder dry !!!

I like fffg 777 in my Omega.  I'm using 80gr behind a 235gr Precision Rifle sabot with wonderful results...1,750 f.p.s. at 50 yards.
However, I use 80gr ffg 777 in my Staghorn with the same sabot and have equal accuracy at 50 or 100 yards but the f.p.s. is only 1,456.
I will try ffg in my Omega after deer season because I got a "deal" on about 7lbs and will want to use it in both guns to burn it up...but only if it performs.

I agree with slave, let your gun decide.

Good luck.
