Iron sight options for #1
« on: September 05, 2006, 03:07:34 AM »
Some of you were kind enough to give me advice on trading/selling my Ruger #1 to aquire a Sharps or High-wall. Well, I got a nice invitation to hunt the northern part of Michigan for deer season, and decided to hang on to the #1. My next dumb question is this: It's a standard variation w/o iron sights. I don't really like scopes, for several reasons. So I'd really like to set it up with a good set of iron sights.

What are some good options?
For the rear sight: should I go open, express style sights or a peep sight? Pros and cons in a hunting situation? Specific sight recommendations?
For the front sight: tunnel sight or open bead? Same questions?

I'd really have liked something like a Marble's tang sight, but with the tang safey on the Ruger, it doesn't seem like an option. Anything else that would be comparable? Thanks for everybody's advice and patience!
You only take one shot at a time, so don't waste it :cb2:

I've seen several #1's with tang sights, but as you mentioned they deleted the tang safety to use them. Most guys carry them with the action open, and no round in the chamber, so the safety is of no use then.
As for sights, I'd go with a receiver peep, and a open bead in front. Don't use a small aperture, just the open hunting aperture.

I will add that the NECG company also makes front sight blades and bead to fit Ruger sights. Additionally, they make some real nice ramps and banded ramps both which will fit Rugers- and they offer many sight options for those too.

The New England Custom Gun rear aperture is a nice sight. However, the "window" is a bit narrow so using the larger apertures allows the sides of that window to intrude in the picture.
