I'm taking the plunge....
« on: October 15, 2006, 03:40:21 PM »
Well tomorrow I am taking the plunge and buying my first NEF. Well actually it will be my son's gun but hopefully he will let ole dad shoot in once in a while. I am getting him a .223 to start with and then he can add whatever he sees fit later.

It's no problem, I will just get this one. Then I won't ever try it again.  ;D

Well I did it, I went and got the first Handi rifle that resides at our house. I brought it home and cleaned it then put a few rounds down the barrel. I will have to say I am IMPRESSED with this little rifle. Trigger is GREAT, and with only 15 rounds or so down the tube it holding 1 inch groups. I am sure with a little more shooting it can only get better. I was shooting some ammo that I picked up at work. Federal 55 grain FMJ rounds. I haven't had a chance to try the Win 45 grain white box ammo in it yet but I bet it will shoot those good too. All in all I am tickled with this little rifle. Hmmmm, may have to get me one too, oooppss did I say that??? ::)

Congratulations on the puchase. If you have a 1/9 twist in your 223(If I'm reading the FAQ page correctly, the NEF 223's produced in late 2005 and all of 2006 have a 1/9 twist rather than 1/12 twist) The faster twist will allow you to stabilize heavier bullets. I would highly recommend the Blackhills Re-manufactured Match 68gr BTHP or 75gr. Not nearly as cheap as the Federal FMJ but deadly accurate in my 1/9 twist.

Congrats!! I wouldn't get too excited about shooting the heavier, longer bullets, even the  Handi/Ultra 1:9" twist barrels don't seem like anything that would normally shoot well in the faster twist barrels, going by all the reports here from those that have tried, but they shoot the 40-55gr very well.

 Centerfire;

  When i got my .223, Quick told me that the "gold standard" for them seems to be the white box WW 45 gr...
...And just like clockwork, he has been proven right..as far as I'm concerned.

The WWB 45's sure shoot well in my .223(1:12). If somebody ever comes up with the WWB 45's recipe he will be a very popular guy on this forum!!!!!

I have another rifle that is a Bakail 12 ga/.223 over and under combo gun. It shoots the white box 45 like a dream. It also shoots 55 grainers pretty good too. I was thinking about trying some heavier bullets in the NEF for my son to use deer hunting. These little deer around here are small anyway, so it should work great.
