Turkey45,if you want to shoot a 270 bullet, and are worried about the recoil then the 6.8 Rem.spcl.is for you.The recoil is like a watered down 243,and ,has a LOT more power.I have a 26" barrell on my encore and it shoots like a dreem.It dosent seem to like the 115 Rem Cor. very much,i get 11/2" groups at 100 yds with mine.Shooting the Hor.from 100grs.too 115grs.they all shoot under 1" at the same dis.I highly recommend this cal.for small men,women and youngsters just starting out,or recoil sensetiv people.
I know a bunch of guys will pile on and say that this and that cal.is better,but for the reasons that you stated, this cal.is the one for you.pan.

I have to agree. the barrel I have for my contender a great.  shoots like a dream and will not punch the daylight out of you.  My sister in law is going to use it this year. she is all of 105 pounds at 5 nothing. ( I picked the wrong sister) that aside she had never shot anything beyond a 22 until this summer and she said she barely noticed to kick.  the 270 may be safe for you to shoot, but if you aren't sure give the 6.8 a shot. on a side note there are load diagrams out there that show the amount of pounds  of recoil the gun has which you could discuss with your cardiagist.  the only problems there will be if your doctor knows nothing about guns and differant guns give differant felt recoil.  honestly your doc will probably have more concerns with you traipsing through the woods than the recoil of a 270. I am just glad to see your not letting your health keep you out of the hunt.  enjoy and stay safe.

turkey45,

I just sold my encore .243 barrel and bought a .270.  The only difference in recoil that I found was how long it took to get back on target.  Didn't cause any more "pain" than the .243.  This starts to change when you move from 130gr. to 150gr.  With 150gr. bullets, the rifle comes back harder, and recoil is more noticable.  This is still pretty low on the recoil spectrum, though. Here are some recoil figures:

.243 w/ 100gr. bullets-------9.42 ft*lbs
.270 w/ 130gr. bullets-------16.42ft*lbs

using 8lb encore (with scope)

hope this helps,
vanbuzen9

If there is a question I wouldn't risk it.
If you reload, H4895 is safe down to 60% of max and is perfect for reduced velocity loads. For example a 130g Hornady Interbond @2500fps provides flat shooting to 200 yds with "popcorn" recoil.
25-06 with Barnes TSX's, or any 100g bullet, at 2800fps should be pleasent long range artilery. With only about 12 ft lbs of recoil in an 8 pound scoped encore, the recoil is basically the same as a 30-30 carbine.
Also the 7-08rem is a formidable cartridge in the right hands.

Whatever you end up using, put a Limbsaver recoil pad on it.. It flat tamed the recoil on my 26" 375 JDJ, made it shootable, and I don't feel anything when shooting my 223. May sound like BS to say that I've felt more recoil from a 22 (as compared to the 223), but consider that I'm telling it like it is and you'll begin to understand just what a difference the Limbsaver makes.

My vote would be a flex-tech stock (sim pad) with the pro-hunter forend will reduce felted recoil by 43%.
