Loads ????
« on: October 19, 2006, 06:16:57 PM »
Being new to the H&R Buffalo Classic, I have a question about what loads the rifle in 45-70 will handle.  Is it strictly 45-70 trap door loads or can it handle the Marlin Lever Action rifle loads?  I hate ask such a minor question but before I load and shoot one I would like to be safe.

I have a 2001 45-70 Marlin so I shoot some heavy loads.  I have found out though the best round for the rifle I have is the Leverevolution round from Hornady.  This may be to hot for the Buffalo Classic though.

I looked thru a lot of posts in this thread and never really found anything about heavy loads. The only thing H&R ads says is " It features a 32" barrel to extract all the velocity possible out of the venerable 45-70 cartridge"  now what does that mean.

Thanks ahead

fknipfer,

H&R states that they can handle the Marlin load levels, some go past that, but I stick with Marlin level or BP loads in my 45-70.

H&R will tell you that levergun loads are safe, but the SB2 action is factory available in .500S&W with a SAAMI MAP of over 50kpsi, which is equal to the .45-70 ruger pressure level, but that's more than most shooters will want to shoot, so most stay in trapdoor or low levergun loads.

Thanks guys,

That was the information I was looking for.  I couldn't believe with modern heat treats they wouldn't handle the Marlin Lever loads but you say they can.  Now I will go shoot some 350gr loads.

Here's Hodgdon's .500S&W data with pressures.
