I once recommended the Mossberg which is really a nice looking and feeling gun. BUT when my friend bought it he had nothing but trouble with it, the gun was doubling almost all the time. Since then I've heard LOTS more complaints about them so I can no longer recommend them. He ended up trading it in on a Huglu Redhead imported by CZ and is a happy camper now.

The CZ or DeHaan imported Huglu guns are what I suggest you take a look at. They are an excellent buy. I think the DeHaan might can be had a bit cheaper but then CZ is importing several different models and in several price ranges so they might not beat all of them.

The Stoeger is about as cheap as it gets and they do look nice but on their site they have forums and there sure are a lot of complaints about problems with them and it would seem from those complaints customer service is about nonexistent. I'd go with the Huglu.

The Stoger is a good looking U/O.  The Remington is a little higher but also appears to be well made.......I personally haven't shot either.

I have a Stoeger, and like it alot.  I don't do any competition shooting, but it does a number on the birds during dove season.  It's my favorite gun to take to the field because it makes me feel like I'm one of the "rich folk" with my over-and-under.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

If you want cheap, there's the Baikal IZH-27. Solid gun, probably cheaper than anything else mentioned. I don't know if EAA still imports them, but I believe they're rebranded and sold as Remington Spartan guns. Personally, I don't need interchangeable chokes or 3" chambers, or a barrel as long as 26", but it points nice for me.

Only things I don't like about mine is the paint on the receiver is apparently hygroscopic, so keep it well oiled, and the cams go "clack-a-clack", so grease 'em.

I picked -up a Steoger for the wife- 20 ga and I've shot a few times for the price it does what it's supposed to do -goes bang and hits what your aiming at! Looks good as well -like it should cost a lot more then it did! I have a real problem spending $1100+ on a shotgun so at $450  the Steoger fit the bill. 8)

I wasn't sure if I would like using an o/u so I bought an entry level gun. A spartan 12 guage. Really like the way an o/u feels. I don't like the automatic safety, but you can turn the extractors on and off which is a nice feature. The gun is decent, a little tight, kind of hard to open but I'm sure that will break in. Better a little too tight than too loose. Over all I'm pretty happy with it. Seemed a little better built than the stroeger to me, at least the one they had to check out. Around the same price too.

Don't know if you've made your purchase yet - I picked up a Khan O/U last year, and am happy with it.  I've used it for quail and grouse, and a round or two of skeet... About $470 for the 20 gauge, comes with 5 choke tubes.

Another vote for the EAA Baikal IZH 27 / Remington Spartan 310. They have the fewest complaints out of the cheapest o/u's. Not pretty, but built like a tank!

I'm no gun snob, but you're probably better off avoiding all those sub $500 (and even sub $1000) over/under guns and going with a quality pump gun or semi auto in that price range. I know, some of 'em, particularly the CZ, look really nice-- but I think that you really DO get what you pay for. After looking at all the cheapy guns-- Stoeger, CZ, Mossberg, DeHaan, Charles Daly, Lanber, Remington/Spartan, etc. I opted to save my pennies (and nickles, dimes, quarters...), and got set up with a brand-new SKB model 505 for about $1100. This is an excellent gun, which will last for a lifetime of shooting. The Franchi Renaissance is also a terrific value, street price is around $1000. If a side by side is your thing, check out the Ugartecheas imported by Lion Country Supply (www.ugartechea.com). A basic boxlock 12ga sells for about $1300.

Here's another vote for the CZ's.  They have several offerings, and they're all reasonably priced.

Better wood & fit & finish than the stoeger's or the Bakhails (sp?) in my opinion.

I've got a bobwhte SxS and love it.
