Browning Single-Shot Rifle Replacement Stocks
« on: October 22, 2006, 01:15:12 PM »
If you have a Browning BPCR you have likely seen some of my threads concerning stock breakage, which the rifles are prone to during shipping if not packaged correctly or handled roughly in transit.  Of course this is not the only reason to need a replacement stock.  For those needing a Browning-style replacement stock, CPA Corporation is the only supplier I’m aware of, other than Browning and their distributors that can fulfill your needs.  I’ve had some recent discussions with CPA’s Gail Shuttleworth.  CPA specializes in single-shot rifles and hardware for such.  See Gail’s comments below.

Their product offering includes made-to-order stocks and forearms for single-shot rifles.  The Browning forearms are available but not advertised on their web site.  The stocks are semi-inletted and will require some fitting and finishing.  Several grades are available, and either right-hand or left-hand versions.  Their current Browning BPCR stocks are patterned from the 1st generation (original design with 3.2” buttplate screw spacing), which has the opening of the through-bolt hole very close to the heel of the stock.  But since the through-bolt hole is drilled in a separate step CPA indicated it can be located to match Browning’s redesigned stock, which moved the hole opening away from the heel and has a 4.05” buttplate screw spacing.

Gail commented, “The Browning has been a special challenge because we don't get many of them in our shop …….and so it has been hard to keep up with the design variations.  If you have sketches, etc. of the different variations, we could probably accommodate them without too much trouble. For example, the through bolt hole is drilled in a separate step after the stock is shaped, so it can be located anywhere. The other difficulty is having the customer describe which model he has - many shooters are not knowledgeable about the differences and so I generally ask only about the upper tang length to determine if it is a BPCR, Traditional Hunter or standard 1885 Highwall.”

“We also make (but do not advertise) replacement forearms for the Browning. These were based upon the Traditional Hunter forearm, but since we've had several customers respond that a replacement "doesn't fit", but cannot explain the difference, I now request that they send the original forearm so we can check the inletting ourselves before doing the work.”

I’ve only heard good things concerning Gail and CPA Corporation.  They can be reached at:

Great info Wayne! Thanks for posting it. I too have heard nothing but good about Shuttleworths. I've only dealt with them on Stevens parts, but always to my utmost satisfaction!
