22 Cal. on 700SA?
« on: October 10, 2006, 09:20:50 AM »
Would like to have a sub-caliber barrel for my 700SA switch barrel rifle. Here are some considerations:
1) Rimless Case with 308 or 39MM head dimensions(I have bolts for both casehead diameters).
2) Low case capacity, i.e. 20 - 25 grs. powder charge or less.
3) Longer barrel life than 22-250.
4) Available brass and ease of creating cases.
5) Low 3's @ 100 yds. and enough RE for GH's to 250 Yds.
6) Prefer to stay with .22 cal. (Big Meathooks)

How about it guys, any ideas come to mind? I'm really not asking for too much am I? "Grin" ;D
I've been kicking around the 22PPC or the 22BR due to their great accuracy, what do you think?

Thanks Guys!
Jim B.

A .22 is not a sub cal.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

Only other thing along these lines, much forgotten/ignored these days, that might help you. .225 Winchester. Imp form will equal .22/250. Factory will almost come close. Very good barrel life and on the large size of what you specify. Rim --semi-rim-- fits .308 bolt face. BR is probably slightly better developed in todays world and certainly more popular... luck

Yhe 22BR has more case capacity than you are looking for but it sure is a great round ! I shoot one for groundhogs and I'm REAL happy with it . It's a very eficient case and will shoot at or just below 22-250 velocities with less powder . Accuracy is excellent in my rifle and I have never heard of anyone haveing a 22BR that didn't shoot well . I say go for the 22BR !

Eather of the rounds you mentioned will sever you well with your stated goals. Personaly though, I want a gun that will reach alot farther than 250 yrds. I`m haveing a .22 0n the 6mm case built. This should give me 3,500 fps with an 80 grain bullet. Where you are getting a wind drift of abt. 40 in. at 500 yrds. in a 10 mph cross wind, I will be getting a wind drift of abt. 15 in. Yes I`ll wear out a barrel alot faster than you, but I figure that`s a small price for double the range, and it will still take alot of rounds to wear it out if you don`t over heat it.
