742 Replacement Barrel
« on: October 17, 2006, 04:52:39 AM »
My Dad has a model 742 in .280 that he found dirt cheap.  He knew something was wrong with it but it was practically being given away by a guy at work.  Here's the problem, the barrel on the gun is no good at all.  Took it to a very respected gunsmith and said a new barrel is the only thing that will help this one.  The overall gun is in great shape except for the barrel.  I was wondering if any of you knew where I could find a replacement barrel.

Thanks

The gunsmith told me that in theory when these guns were made you could switch out the barrels if needed.  For instance a the long-actions in .280, .30-'06 and .270 are all interchangeable.  He didn't know if special tools were needed for fitting though.  Is this true???

You might get a few more responses if you post this question in the gunsmithing forum.....
