Scope recommendation for 357 & 308
« on: October 26, 2006, 05:03:34 PM »
As some of you know I have sent off my frame for a 308 and 357 barrel to use for deer hunting and general fun.  Well I just sent them off and I am already planning what I will do when I get them back. ;D  So I need some input on scopes for the two barrels.  I have a 2.8-10x44 aetec which I figure would work nicely on the .308 barrel.  I also have a 2.75 power Simons shotgun scope that might work on the .357.  I figure the .357 would be fun with a low power variably or a good fixed low power scope.  I also have an Aimpoint, a 5-15X50 Bushnell Elite 3200 and a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 that I could use.  But then I would have to buy something  for the rifles they are on.  So lets here what you would use on the .357 and .308 from what I have or from what my Visa card could have. :)

Your right put a low power scope on the 357 and the Aetec on your 308. That's a nice combo. I've used it for a few years now. The only difference is my 357 is a Colt. I would like to see how the 357 does in a much longer barrel.

I put a 1-1/2-5X Leupold Vari-XIII on my .308 Remmy 750. It's light and guaranteed for life--- but pricey! But I love how it works and looks. Also you might want to take a look at the Burris Signature Zee rings. They are so good!!!

I like to keep things simple so this is just my opinion.
Use would the sights that come on the 357.
For the 308 a good quality 4x32 from any decient company.

I have a couple of the entry level Leupolds.  They are nice.  The Bushnell 3200 & 4200 are nearly unbeatable at any price.

I have a 30mm Ultra Multi Dot on my chopped 357 works very well for 357 ranges.  I have a 2.5 power shotgun scope on my 1894 357 but it has to much eye relief and doesn't work well for low light.

i think for the 357 like a fixed four or five power would be great, and i would stick with the aetec on the 308.

Yep, what I was gonna say. A 4x32 would be excellent for the .357, at least until you ream it to a Max ;). The Aetecs are reeeally hard to beat for the medium to long range work. I have 4 of them myself. All of mine are the old, not Master Series models and they are superb optics. Track true and gather plenty of light for the early and late shots.

I could put the Aimpoint on the .357 but then I would have to buy something for my AK ;)

I have a 3-9X Bushnell $29.95 scope on my .357 Mag.  Most of you have seen the kind of groups I shoot with it at 100 yards, so I think it's probably sufficient for the job.  I think it came from Academy.

The shot gun scopes are probably OK, if the parallax isn't set for 50 yards.  I shoot mine out further than 50 yards, so I use a rifle scope with the parallax set for 100 yards.

Those $29.95 Academy Bushnells are $38.95 now BTW. Sharpshooter I believe is the model class.

You're probably right about the price, I seem to remember (that's getting to be a bigger chore now!) $29.95 may have been a sale price.

I have a stack of non-functioning Simmons and Tascos I've taken off of various guns, but these Chinese Bushnells seem to be as durable as the older Japanese models.
