Safety problems?
« on: October 23, 2006, 09:22:42 AM »
I got a Remington 700 SPS a couple a days ago, and I have a question:

If I load the rifle and fire, I'm not able to set the safety level to safe position. It seems to be stuck. When I open the bolt, I can move the level. Is it something wrong with the rifle, or does it only need some oil?

It may be designed that way.  Once the gun has been fired, it is ultimately safe.  No need to apply a mechanical safety.

I just checked all three of my Rem M-7's (essentially the same action) and my M-700, and I can't reset the safety lever to the safe position until I lift the bolt handle on any of them!
Must be that's the way they're supposed to be.

Don't matter what gun you use,

I've been talking with the dealer now, and they said that the rifle is designet that way (as pointed out before).

I think that's kind of strange, because the instruction manual says that you should always engage the safety level before doing anything with the gun...  ???

And thank you for your answers!   :)

Well I guess they figure with a spent cartridge in the chamber, there isn't a whole lot you can do with it except beat someone over the head with it, so the issue of the saftey lever going back to "safe" isn't that big of an issue.
