Opinions on Winchester model 670?
« on: September 06, 2006, 05:02:24 PM »
I was at my local gun store the other day and saw a Winchester model 670 in .30-06.  I've never owned one or known anybody who did.  Anybody out there own an M670?  What is your experience with quality, durability, accuracy, safety, smoothness of action/feeding?  Thanks!

What I remember is that the 670 was a no frills rifle Winchester came out with, for those who couldn't cough up the bucks for a full-blown model 70.  I knew several fellows who had them, in .30-06 and they liked them alright.  They were a working gun you could throw in the back of the pickup or into a canoe and not worry about it losing value because you damaged the finish.

Thanks for the info, Winter Hawk.  I'm going to take a closer look at that M670 the next time I'm at the gun shop.

I have a Model 670A; I'm not sure what the difference is between it and the Model 670.  Mine is chambered in .30-06 and is very accurate and reliable.  It is a push feed Model 70 in a satin finish and has no floorplate.

I have a 670 takeoff stock on a M70 Black Shadow 270.  Sort of a old, cheap Winchester with an older, cheap Winchester stock kind of thing....Anyway, the wood is fantastic.  It is precisely inlet, well-finished with a satiny quality(might be age), and very hard wood.  It is not walnut, but a very hard wood none the less.  Don't know about the rifle, but the stock is great for what it is worth.

I had a 670 in 30.06 and it was a piece of crap. Shot ok but the magazine was not well designed and rounds "popped" out and stove piped.  I was going to rebarrel to 8x57, but I could not get the magazine to work.  I swapped it (with full disclosure) to a friend who thought he could fix it.  HE never did.

I have a M670 30-06, my first big game rifle,  my second centerfire. It never did shoot decently with its original stock, a piece of birch that marched to the beat of some drum I knew nothing about. I made a laminated stock for it before they were so readily available. Now it shoots very well with the right loads. It has taken its share of meat, at least a dozen each of caribou and moose. Many of these rifles have a sliding safety. Mine has the 3-position M70 type. I would grab another of the latter in a heartbeat. They're good rifles, just not pretty.
