Ejector question
« on: October 25, 2006, 06:35:27 PM »
I have a brand new ultra light Handi in 243. Bought it new in the box. I was messing around with it tonight with a dummy load to see how the chamber felt, how it closed and how it ejected. When I drop a shell in the chamber with the breech open all the way the ejector drops down low enough so the round falls right into the chamber. It doesn't catch on the ejector. On closer inspection it seems the ejector has a lot of up and down play in it. If I don't quite open the breech all the way then the shell catches on the ejector when loading just like my 223 and all the others. It ejects just fine. Anyone else ever hear of this problem? It just doesn't seem right.

There are 2 different ejectors, newer ejectors have a lifter button that allows the ejector to drop down out of the way, older ejectors don't have the lifter button. If the barrel isn't opened all the way, the ejector doesn't drop down.  Current production don't have ejectors, they have extractors that don't drop down at all, they capture the cartridge when it's inserted into the chamber. There's a pic of later model ejectors parts in the FAQ and Help.

On my new 308 Ultra. the ejector (?)  looks like the one on the bottom of the FAQ picture. I have read several threads about this here and I'm confused. I have had no ejection problems, but it bothers me that most of the time the shell catches on the ejector (like my NEF .17). Sometimes however, the shell goes completely in the chamber. This seems to happen completely random (I open the barrel the same nearly all the time. What should it be doing? Am I harming the action by closing the rifle with the shell not on the extractor?  How can I get it to do the same think every time? Thanks

Yours is an ejector, if you open the action all the way, the ejector claw should drop down and allow the rim of the cartridge to go all the way into the chamber, if it is open all the way and the ejector still catches the rim, I would R&R the ejector and clean it good, polishing the ejector housing and claw while it's out, wouldn't hurt to put a BB behind the spring while you're at it. If the action is not quite open all the way, the ejector may or may not drop down. It could also have a missing/broken/weak lifter button spring.
