I tapped my NEF 12 muzzle for Rem Choke
« on: January 05, 2007, 04:35:28 AM »
I bought all the stuff from Brownells to make 12 ga muzzles take Rem Chokes.
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=4974&title=GILCHRIST+PRECISION+CHOKE+REAMER
I got the reamer with just the .725, 727, and 729" bushings.
I got the tap, that uses the same bushings
I got the adjustable reamer.
I have a big lathe with a spider that I can dial in both ends of the barrel

Here is what I learned:
1) I need at least .845" outside muzzle diameter for the 32TPI [threads per inch] Remchoke. If the barrel is smaller, tooling for a 44TPI True Choke is needed. My NEF shotgun barrel has plenty of outside diameter. Another old gunsmith who does allot of this told me, "Also, the .845" is if the bore is centered in the barrel." That old guy cuts off the choke before he bores, reams, and taps. I cut through the old choke constriction.
2) Rather than the adjustable reamer, I have been using a boring bar.

How did it come out? Would you willing to do the work for members here now that you have the proper reamers and tap? If so how much for the work? If it is something I could afford I would like you to do a 12 gauge or 2 of my Handis next month. Thanks....<><.... ;D

That would constitute "doing business" and would require he be a paid advertiser on the site in order to discuss this on open forum. So unless he is interested in becoming a paid advertiser I recommend no answer to this be given on open forum.

Oops!!! Sorry GB I got carried away....Please don't hold it against tnekkc he was only telling the rest of the members what he did. I was the one that committed the  faux pas and almost made it advertising for business. I am so embarassed and sorry for that error....<><.... :-[

Understood, that's why I stepped in before he might have had the chance to respond as you asked. Just take any such correspondence off forum via PM, e-mail or phone and no rules will have been broken.

No,
I am not in the gun biz.

Many gunsmiths offer this process.
You could look in the yellow pages under gunsmiths and make few calls.

I bought  some old 12 barrels off ebay for practice.
I put threads on both ends.

If you do this, don't take it into the house.
It runs into everything:(

did you actually make that long barrel as well? I think Hastings makes a long barrel like that they refer to it as a predator barrel or something like that. they say they are really quiet as well.
Have you shot that? How about a report on it.

         thanks,

Each old barrel got a Rem choke ream and tap at the muzzle end and external theads cut on the input end, with a sort of forcing cone cut on the input bore.

Then each of the barrels were screwed into each other end on end.

Old shotgun barrels go for $20 on ebay and are typically 30" long.

I cut off the chamber, extractor, lug, sight, etc.

I bought a Hastings Metro barrel, and looked at that before I started.

Probably not the best choice for home defence. ::)
PROUD REDNECK CONSERVATIVE

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun
