Please post a few pictures. Maybe i can help if I have an idea of what you are working with.
If I am being a little too forward, please forgive me. I haven't spent much time on this board and being new to this forum I have no idea what you have or are expecting to accomplish.
To get rid of shine I usually gently buff with 0000 steel wool , like quickdtoo mentioned or a courser car polish that is made for removing oxidation. Regular polish will probably make it shinier/worse. Brownell's sell the rougher version of the car polish if you want to try it, called Stock rubbing compound (bet you would never guess that one
). Why pay the extra? If you use a buffing compound, keep a spray bottle of half mineral spirits & half mineral oil handy. Whatever they add to compiunds dries out quickly. This won't and makes a great lubricant. Careful not to overdue the buffing. Papertowels make cheap buffing rags. Don't last long....but you can buy a whole lotta paper vs. a small bag of rags.
BTW, I am a custom stock maker.
Good luck,
Chris
