Son's Deer With a 357 Handi
« on: October 23, 2006, 09:26:35 AM »
My 10 year old stepson, Derek, shot a 75 lb. doe last night with my 357 Mag Handi. The shot was about 75 yards using a 140 grain Winchester Silvertip HP. The deer took only a couple of steps before piling up.  This gun has a red dot. As I always tell him, bullet placement trumps everything else. The bullet took a rib out and the top of the heart while bone fragments took out the lungs.  I was well pleased with the bullet performance and Derek's shooting.

Congratulations to Derek and to you also. It seems the .357 is enough for deer if, as you stated, bullet placment is correct....<><.... :)

Yep, them .357's are to small to take deer with. Just dont tell that to the one in my avatar. Course he cant hear you due to the fact that he was killed by my .357 Blackhawk.

Congrats to your son!  Give him a pat on the back for me.

Has anyone chrono'd a 357 bullet out of a handy? If you can get 1500 fps out of a 4 inch revolver, should be approaching lower 30-30 velocity out of the rifle? That should be plenty for a small deer.

The Hodgdon Annual and Lyman 48th show velocities of ~1670 fps for 170gr jacketed bullets out of 18˝" or 20" barrels, 2300fps with 125gr jacketed bullets, to give you an idea.

You should be approaching the 7.62x39 MillSurp ammo.

Tim

I'm getting 1740 fps MV (not instrumental velocity) out of my Handi with a 170 gr LSWC, but that's using .38 Special brass!  I guess I need to check that bullet with .357 or .360 DW  brass and see how close it is to 2000 fps.  ;)

I get about 2200 fps MV with a 125 gr Golden Saber in .357 brass.

I just bought my license for this Saturday's seaon opening and i still don't know which Handi to use, but I'm leaning toward the .357 again with the 250 gr.  ;D

I have been away for a long time. No, not in jail, but away from my first love, H&R.

I sacnned their web site diligently for caliber listing and no .357.   :(

Then I read the "Rifle Maganzine" Nov-Dec 2006 test and it listed .357 as one of the test calibers!(?)

Then I saw this post.  Is there any hope that the .357 is still alive?

The .357mag is alive and well as an accessory barrel! ;)

Derek, congratulations on your deer .I do not have a handi in 357,but I have a Savage 24 and a Rossi in 357.I am getting 1810 fps out of the Savage and 1790 out of the Rsossi, this is with a 180gr FNGC and a bunch of LilGun ,both will shoot into minute of deer at 100yds.This load is very close to the original 30-30 load ,and we know that the 30-30 will not kill deer   my2c    Doug
