Ever drill and tap a receiver?
« on: November 11, 2006, 01:27:31 AM »
I have my son's used chipmunk .22 rifle and 2 sks rifles that I want to mount scopes on at the
receivers.
I considered gunsmiths but can get costly so would consider doing it myself if not all that difficult.
I know you need a drill press, bits and a manual tap device but have never seen done before.
Do this something that can be accurately done after little practice with 'practice metal'?

Almost anyting can be learned but with a gun you usually get 1 chance to get it right. That said if you're careful and pretty handy with tools you can do this. Have you ever used metal taps before? The bases to be attached to the receiver CAN be used to find the spot for the hole. A transfer punch is the way to go.. Start the hole with a center drill, it won't walk off the punch mark and beware the SKS. Some have brittle hard receiver covers and drilling is a pain..

Brasskeeper, according to that site, the item is sold out, discontinued and they won't be getting any more.  Otherwise it was a great deal (all steel too).
