7MM mauser and the 160 grain Speer Hotcor
« on: September 28, 2006, 04:56:12 PM »
I went out to the lease last weekend to do some hog hunting and work on my stand. I shot a 150 pound hog at dark saturday. It was running and I stopped my swing a bit short. The bullet hit in gront of the hips shattering the spine and exiting. The finisher was at a sitting up hog facing away. The bullet hit at the front of the shoulder blade, went thru the neck diagonallyand exited thru the lower jaw. This all happened pretty quick. Muzzle velocity was around 2650 fps and range was 80 yards or so. This sow was very clean with no disernable bad odor. Bet she makes some fine smoker meat. The bullet held together well yet made a damage area 3 1/2 inches across and bloodshot was entirely reasonable.

To Me, the 7mm Mauser is the greatest all around
hunting round ever developed anyway.
Perfect choice!

The rifle is a 24/47 mauser action with a stainless Adams & Bennet barrel cut to 19 inche and a Bold triggers. The stock is one of the Ramline synthetics. My "truck" gun. I had a redfield scope rebuilt by ABO optics and this setup never changes point of impact. As to the Speer bullets performance I consider it an outstanding bullet but out of the 7x57 I have come to expect good bullet performance out of all the bullets I have used.

I shoot 160 grain Speer Grand Slams religiously.... because we had a great supply of cheap factory seconds, which has just dried up.

This bullet pushed at about 2500 fps by 44 grains of IMR 4350 is all I use. It works on everything, is cheap to run, doesn't kick, and shoots flatter than trajectory nerds would believe. Sighted two inches high at 100 yards I am real confident out to 300 yards and I have only ever fired at fur that far twice, once 320 Elk, and 298 coyote.
The rest have all been under 2 hundred yards.

This year's white-tail at 110yards was a one shot affair (details on deer hunting page), and the butcher asked me what I was using because, in his words, "It must be a big gun, there was no blood shooting near the entrance hole but inside there was all kinds of trauma, and the exit hole was about two inches with some bone carried away."  He just shook his head when I smiled and handed him a round.

Slow speed, lightning kills, take that velocity pimps.
Get as close as you can, then get ten yards closer.

While I like my 7x57 as a general purpose rifle I do feel there is a useful area of my hunting the faster cartridges are a bit better at than my 7x57. But in general most of my shooting takes place at ranges less than 250 yards and the 7x57 works perfectly there.

That's pretty close to the favorite load of a nameless .270 addict. His wife used it in Africa to take 17 head of game with 19 shots. One big antelope didn't know it was dead, so Elenor just kept shootin'.  ;)

I've used the 7x57 since the late 80's, I've killed deer with the 175 gr RN and 140 gr Nosler Part.,139 gr Hornaday interloc, the 7x57 is a GREAT round!!!

My recently acquired 7MM Remington magnum is waiting to see how the 160 grain Hotcor's perform pushed as fast as Reloder 22 can push them. I have loads with both the Mag Tips and  the spitzer Hotcor. I bought the rifle to rebarrel into a 375 H&H but it shot so well after some tinkering I decided to own a 7 mag instead.

I don't know the true velocity I am getting but I am using 64.0 grains of Reloder 22, CCI 250 mag primers, Remington brass under the 175 grain Hornady, and the 2 Speer bullets with no pressure signs and very good accuracy.

I've shot those 175gr Serria bullets at 2950 FPS. I use H1000 for powder. I got my loads from Steve's loads.

They are good loads for my 7mm Mag. I have a 26" barrel.

Next weekend I am going out to the lease with Tommy. He's semi disabled and I am going to help him take his does and whatever buck he comes across by hanging and cutting up/ packaging/ draggting etc. My 7Mag is going but my main rifle is still my 7x57. The problem I have with using any of my other rifles is the 7x57's ongoing never changing point of impact and I haven't had my 7Mag long enough to have that much trust in it. I had to worlk yesterday so I wasn't there and the lease manage was at my stand. He shoots a 45-70 with a red dot sight so the 180 class buck he saw was too far away but if I had been there with my 270 or either of my 7MM's I would have that mount I have been looking for soooo long.
