New guy
« on: October 31, 2006, 04:26:39 PM »
Just bought my first handi a 223 ultra.
I've no intention of shoting the nato rounds all rounds will be handloaded.

Born and raised in the Michigan hardwoods and cedar swamps.
Putting my hat in the ring for some coyote hunting hence the 223.
Hope to take advantage of the accesory barrel program. ;D

I'd like to hear from others with the same rifle and what your pet loads are.

Nice place and plenty of info.

Welcome to GBO!! Most that shoot factory ammo and many that can't find a handload that shoots as good, shoot the Winchester Whitebox 45gr JHP, me included, sub moa is the standard for this ammo and at $14 for 40rnds, priced right for good shooting factory ammo. It's not fur friendly tho from those that have shot coyotes with it.

You'll do good to use 55gr or lighter bullets, some will shoot 60gr-64gr bullets ok, but even the 1:9" twist barrels don't like the heavier bullets from all reports here.

There are several recent threads on .223 loads, look back a few pages to find those, the search function is disabled, hopefully for not much longer. :'(

My .223 really likes Black Hills 52gr JHP Match loads, but their a bit pricey compared to the whitebox Winchester stuff.

My best 3 shot group this past summer was 3/8".  Most grouping around 1/2" to 3/4".

Thanks for the welcome.

I'd noticed the 1:9 twist. Its a good thing that I've only 55gr and smaller from my mini-14 days.
I'm testing a load that I set just of the lands useing Varget and 55gr FMJ.

I've MicPherson book and 13 years as a machinist I excited about puting some of his upgrades to the test.

He built a Marlin lever for me earlier this year and it shoots like a custom bolt rifle.

The 223 Handi is a great barrel choice for yotes....and for a-lot of good target shooting...
