Dead deer or wounded deer?
« on: October 29, 2006, 04:34:24 PM »

My buddy arrowed a deer tonite in north Macomb county, MI. He should not have taken the shot but he did. He was in a treestand and the 8 pt buck was at about 15 yards. It was feeding with its head down and he shot it in the neck. The arrow passed completly through. Originally the blood was alot and bright red. We let the deer be for about 3 hours and went back to follow the trail, we followed about 100 yards until we stopped seeing blood in a swamp so we called it quits for the night. So my question is should we continue the search tommorow or just assume that it survived? I myself do not bow hunt and all the deer i have shot with a gun have never ran more than 40 yards. So i am not sure if it is safe to assume the deer survived or not.

I would assume it is dead untill Ive walked my legs off looking. The deer deserves that. What are you shooting and how many deer how you killed that none have ran further than 40 yds?

jpred1, to clarify my buddy shot the deer not me. i have only shot 6 deer and have used .35 Rem 200gr, and .280 Rem 139 gr,but i am only 20 years old. I guess its a combination of luck and good shot placement that none of the deer i have shot have gone farther than 40 yards. Plus i hunt in the up of michigan and shots average about 40 yards normally, close shooting.

Blaster, By all means take another look...If found countless deer that have " gotten away"  I f you think how far a deer can run in 30 sec. or a minute this may put it into perspective for you.. I live in Lake Orion and used to hang at Auburn Archery..let us know how it turns out- Kevin

Also - Follow the game trails and keep and keep an eye on brush about knee to waist height . In day light you may find a continuation of the blood trail there

Blaster...By all means go back in the morning...Also Get a spray bottle pour some peroxide in it and add about 3 drops of yellow food dye in it.. Start spraying it around the last place you picked up blood sign...It will help show up the blood. Like gunslinger said...you would be completely surprised how far a deer can go in just 30 seconds. And just bleeding out creates no real "shock" on the deer such as a lung or heart shot would. If you cant pick up the trail start searching in 180 degree paths gradually moving out from the last point of blood. Good luck
You want a divorce if I go hunting today??? Well sorry ta see ya go...Was nice knowin ya..Dont let tha door hit ya where tha good lord split ya :D

I would go out and try to pick up the trail again with fresh eyes.

Last year my brother-in-law shot a deer with his sweet 16 and it was a good shot and that deer ran some 250 yards. It bleed for all except the last 40 yards into a thicket. It was only that from my stand that I saw where it fell that we found it easily. With the shot he did I would not have expected it to go more than 50 yards at most.

Luckily for me the doe he shot was in estreus and a nice 6 point started sniffing her as she lay dead and I shot him. That day we shot 2 deer each in 10 minutes and filled our tags for the year on the first day.

I didnt mean to seem jerky in my post.Just,I always look long and hard after a single drop of blood is found.Freshin up on tracking skills and good luck. One day you will need them.Being a bow hunter I guess tracking, crawling, and slow pursuit is a must.

no offense taken jpred1. Unfortunately after tracking the deer for 500 yards the blood trail stopped and we looked everywhere and were not able to find him, and i have heard no coyotes from the area. I feel confident that our search was thorough, and the deer survived. I think my buddy just grazed him, hopefully he'll get another whack at him and take a better shot next time. the deer are rutting right now in se MI so they are getting kinda stupid.
