Rem. Mountain Rifle Scope Rings

I`m having a time finding the right Rings for my rifle.  Rings for the Model 700 will work - right ?  Do you need the base for this or can you just use rings. I`m wanting a med. profile ring for my Burris Fullfield II either Leupold or Weaver.

The first thing you have to do is buy the BASE that fits the gun. If you get a one piece it has to be bought as short or long action depending on which you have. If two piece bases are used the same bases fit either short or long action.

Then you must buy rings to fit the bases you bought. Rings are basically universal for any given base but bases are unique to the gun. The only two options I ever use on Remington Mtn. Rifles are the Weaver type bases #35 and #36 as I recall and then I use Burris Signature Zee Rings. Or I use either the Burris or Leupold Dual Dovetail base/rings. With that latter pair the rings are unique to the dual dovetail bases and do not fit the standard Redfield generic bases.

I know this may sound stupid but if you don`t ask you`ll never know. I have a .270 Win. and have never owned one so I don`t know if it`s a short or long action.

Your .270 Win. will be a long action.  As for rings and bases, Leupold is a different system than weaver and doesn't interchange.

Also consider the objective diameter as the rings will come in low, med, high, and extra high.

Might be better to take the rifle to a place that mounts scopes so you won't have to make several trips back and forth should you get the wrong mounting hardware.   Now mounting scopes ain't rocket science, but with so many different combinations of scopes, rings, and bases, every once in awhile a fellow takes home the wrong stuff.  It happens from time to time.......

Much easier if your not familar with the hardware to have it done in a gunshop.

I`ve mounted scopes before but was wondering about the bolt hitting with a low profile ring. I will take your advise and take my rifle and scope to a gunshop so all the guessing is out the window. I`d really like to get rings that fit the 700 model so I don`t have to use a base.  It just seems wrong to buy a rifle that is tapped for scope and have to use a base. It`s not like the Rem. 700 is some new thing out their and you have to modify it with a base just to get the rings to fit.

My long action Mtn. rifle has a Leupold Quick Release mount/ring system with "super low" rings carrying a Bushnell 3200 3-9x40mm glass.  Works very well, didn't need or want  anything higher.

I agree with that in saying I also like a low profile so you can get your cheek right down on the rifle.  I was just a little concerned about the bolt hitting a low profile ring. Did you have to use a base with your rings ?

It seems to me you really don't understand the basics of guns that are drilled and tapped. That is for BASES NOT for rings. That's the way it works. Bases fit the guns and rings fit the bases. That's the way of life except for Ruger and one other. I hate those and would rather not own one.

Talley makes a lightweight ring/base combo that I have on one of my M700's that works well.
