30-30 could have proved its worth, dang it!

...well, I hunted a new patch of ground closer to home than ever before, "ceptin" maybe when i used to hunt down the street from my dad's house where i grew up.....anyway, after less than 2hours in the woods i came to rest upon a mossy old tree stump on a hill and I was not there more than about 15 minutes when a startled doe big and fat as they come (I would guess about 125-135 pounds) came trotting right do0wn the hill straight towards me...she was completely unaware ofmyu presence and only came to stop and look at me when she was about 40-feet from me a little to my right of center....she then went to my left and headed downhill further and closer and then stopped right in front of me (perhaps now a tiny left of center) at a distance nom more than 30-35 feet!!!!!....she looked right at me and paused for perhaps a full ten seconds and then ran downhill at a clip ....but never raised her tail.....if only I had a damned doe tag this year!!!!!!.....oh well, good day anyway.....I watied about an hour for a love sick buck to follow her but to no avail.....went home and had some lunch and cut some more firewood ......now for the beer and bourbon.....akh

A great story andrewtheelder3 and hang in there, as long as the deer keep walking out in front of you your having a great day, and one of them is bound to be a buck, especially soon in Maine. The peak of the first rut is due from about 11/7 to 11/17 so those old bucks should be running footloose and fancy free with only ONE thing on their minds any day now. Keep going out in the woods, thats where I hear most of the deer are shot anyway, not in camp in front of the woodstove....<><.... :)

....yes, i agree on all points made....and the funny thing is i found about two dozen frenzied looking ground scrapes in an area where two deer trails and a surveyors trail all sort of make a sixway intersection deep in the woods....plan to put son number two (14 yrs old) on a small tree stand right there soon.....the doe it turns out was startled by another bunch of hunters entering the woods....and poorly so as they were upwind of her...poor planning on their part....hell i was smoking a pipe and everything and she still never smelled me......
