Dual range transmissions????

Anyone have a dual range transmission on your quad?  How often do you use it?    :-)

I've got a 2002 Yamaha Kodiak with dual range auto transmission.  I have used the low range when climbing a pretty steep hill or pulling a heavy trailer.  You don't need it often, but when you do, it's sure nice to have.

I also found I use 4WD a little more than I thought.  I was on a trail that had a lot of logs covered in vines.  Have 4WD engaged seem to help the front end over the logs a little easier and to pull you off the the log.

Hey I own a 1999 suzuki 500 quadmaster. I use low range while pulling tralers and plowing snow. Our other two quads are polaris and dont have low range. so I consider mine a work machine

How do you like that suzuki?  I've not owned a suzuki atv yet,  but do ridee a suzuki motorcycle.   THey were the originals in atv's I believe and seem to be making some nice machines again.  How do you like yours?

Hey, about my suzuki 500......I love it!!! All except the rear axle is not independent. We also own two Polaris quads with the independent suspention and it is very nice on the trail. My 500 beats me up alittle. But for working on the farm, plowing snow, and riding all day in the mud and never getting a drop on me........it was the best 5,200.00 bucks I ever spent. That was delivered with a plow in Nov of 1999.

Can you adjust the ear shock?  I think they have a few settings so you may be able to soften that ride up a bit.   Yeah, those Suzuki 500's are very nice quads.  I would not mind owning one at all.

Rear shock adjustment??? Oh, I have the front and rear jacked up as far as they will go. And I took the stock 25 inch tires off and put 27 inchers on. A two inch lift is in the future. So maybe it was something I did to stiffen the ride?????????? Boys will be boys.......Except that my wife keeps reminding me that I am 32 years old :-D   :-D  :-D  :-D

we know why it tends to beat you up a little bit.  Can't get a smooth ride and stiffen the shocks, lift and oversize tires too.  I think I like the lift and oversize tires more than a soft comfy ride too.  After all it is an atv!   :-)

Arctic Cat 400 4x4 and ditto on using the low gear for plowing, also use low to skid logs.

The artic cats are nice machines also. The engines are suzuki, but they have some very nice features. I would recommend a dual range for HARD work. A high only tranney for running around the woods or plowing alittle snow. 8)

Does your AC have the independant rear suspension or the solid axle?  I saw in their latest brochure that you can order one either way.  I like the idea of a solid axle and 4X4 for the really hard work.  How long have you had yours and how's it holding up?  Got any AC stories or pic's to share?

It has a solid axle.  I don't have any complaints except that the front brake dosen't work any more.  It has a brake lock that is applied by depressing the brake lever on the handle and flipping a catch over to hold it in place.  A friend left it on for an extended period of time and now it feels like the master cyl. needs a rebuild.  Maybe not but that is the first thing I thought of as it has no pressure at all.  I've had it for about 2 1/2 years and it seems to be holding up pretty good.  Needs seat repair as I have a jealous lab that wants to ride with me.

mark :lol: I have a kingquad in Wv. you use the low gear alot .While hunting this fall I broke and axle and was able to keep hunting the rest of the trip  :lol:

did the rear axle break on that Kingquad?  I've never heard of that happening before.  Or was it in the front end?  I've heard of that happening, but not often.  Was it under warranty?  If not, what does a repair like that cost?   I've always liked the Kingquad.  Not for looks so much, but because of they way that take care of business.
 I am wishing my Kawasaki Mule 550 had a dual range tranny!

I am not a huge fan of Suzuki, but the Kingquad is one of the best atv's I have ever ridden. We were in Arkansas once and we dogged one out bad but it never broke down. I mean we took no mercy on this thing. I beleive the kingquad is one of the most reliable atv's there is. We did everything from mudhogging with two people on it at once to pulling full size chevy trucks out the mud. The guy that owned it used it for moving around junk cars also. His son was the one that tore it up. A few months after I left it finally broke down but I cant blame the machine for tearing up because the owner took bad care of it. I know another guy who had one and he was thinking about buying another atv but he said that he couldnt see his self buying another one becuse his old early 90's model kingquad wouldn't tear up. He said it was just too reliable and it didn't make any sence to buy anything else.

it's hard to argue with the evidence.  Those Suzuki's are hard to beat when it comes to reliability and durability.  ALot of companies came out with designs and features that left Suzuki behind for a number of years,  but Suzuki finally has begun to update their designs.  THose Suzuki engines and transmission though have always been good, and probably why Artic Cat uses them.

:oops: Kingquad is a good machine . It was my misstake for braking the axle .Water got in the brake froze an i try to brake it free by put it in low lock . live and learn. :lol:
