I hate new brass!
« on: October 28, 2006, 04:30:45 PM »
LOL!  It is a pain.  Kind of like going on a blind date.
You don't know what to ask of them.
You don't know how the evening will turn out.
You don't know if they will be back for a second or, ghast, third date.
You don't know if you want to marrry....oh...never mind.  It just sucks prepping new brass!

That why I only chamfer the mouth, put in a primer, dump in some powder and a bullet and shoot it with new brass.  I save my prep for after its been fire formed.

Yup!  I'm with beemanbeme!

I look it over for obvious flaws and then load and use it!

amen, y'all. that's what i was hoping to hear, since that's what I do...i do usually run them through the sizing die, since some companies (Winchester) let 'em leave the factory with D-shaped mouths or cracks on the mouth of the case.

however, the remington brass is so ugly and usually tarnished...it looks like it's been out in the rain a week or two and then annealed randomly...that I buy almost exclusively Winchester anyway.

federal is nice-looking and seems to be of good quality but it ALWAYS hates me. it either refuses to let me seat a new primer (damn that red sealant) or it simply doesn't size down like i want it to.

but in any case, i will usually chamfer the mouths so the bullet can seat easily and then load 'em up...ready to go.

the last batch (before this .204 bag i bought tonight) i brought home of Winchester brass, i threw away something like 19 pieces, due to cracks and deformities. i think when i buy 100 cases i should be able to use the whole amount. i understand if a few are not perfect, nothing is 100 percent...but a 20 percent loss is a bit more than i wanted.

In the past when I have had issues with a significant number of pcs. of brass per 100 I contacted the manufacturer....in my case Remington Munitions Plant. They "more than" made up for their error. 20% is pretty bad depending on what was wrong with them. Again in my case one lot was irregular neck thickness around each case neck and another batch was not correctly annealed ....every case that I fired split the long ways.

Funny you should say that.

Just for grins one day, I measured and weighed a random sampling of my Winchester and Remington .30-30 and .30-06 brass.  The Remington numbers were all over the place, but the Winchesters were consistent, all the way across the board.  From then on, I've only bought Winchester brass, no matter what the caliber.

Prepped 100 more tonight.  50 in .243 and fifty in 204.  Only fifty more of the 243 to go.

I am using Winchester and Remington brass.  I don't have an absolute preference, each have their minor problems.

The only thing I do to new brass is I chamfer the mouth seat a primer and load it unless there is a defect. Then
I discard it but if I ever have alot of them. I would write the manufactor and tell them.  So far I haven't had any.
