Powder drop AND case belling on the Hornaday LnL
« on: October 11, 2006, 12:39:16 PM »
I'm on the verge of purchasing the Hornaday LnL.  One feature that seems to be lacking on the Hornaday LnL progressive is the ability to drop powder AND bell the case at the same time.  I have found other posts that claim you  can modify a Lyman "thru" expander to work with the LnL.  However, I found Hornaday's Quick Change Powder Die, that works with the case activated powder drop, and it drops powder AND bells the case at the same time.     It seems this die would free up a station so that you could use Hornaday's Powder Cop Die and have a system the works just like a Dillon.  Am I missing something or what?  Does anybody use or have experience with these two Hornaday dies??

Slow or down

I can't tell you all how much I like this site. Terrific!!! The drawback is that it sooo slow at times. About 50% of the time I can't get on because my browser times out. The other times it times out switching pages. Not complaining, just informing.

REM MODEL 48 problems
« Reply #3 on: October 12, 2006, 05:52:50 AM »
A friend of mine was shooting some clay birds with his model 48 20 gauge and the entire barrel was shoved back and jammed completely against the bolt. Any one ever see this ? He was using the low brass bird loads in # 8 's. Obviously something came apart that allowed the barrel to move that far but I have never had one of those apart. ???

Elk hunting tactics
« Reply #8 on: October 26, 2006, 09:00:50 AM »
I unsuccessfully hunted elk first rifle season in Colorado GMU 75 last week.  I didn't even seen an elk.  I did see plenty of elk tracks, elk poop along these tracks, one elk antler rub on a tree, and one set of elk beds.  I think I was at the right altitude and right place.  I did hear enough gun shots around me.  I'm interested in hearing your advice on best tactics for hunting elk.

Let me tell you the tactics I used and why an experienced elk hunter disparaged these tactics for have low odds of succeeding.  I found a small, 2-5 acre park hidden in the dark timber.  I got to this park before sun rise one morning and waited in ambush until 10 AM for elk to show.  On a different day I waited in ambush at this same park in the evening for elk to show.  I didn't see any elk.  The problem with this tactic is that there are probably thousands of similar parks in this mountain area and no good reason to expect the elk to show here.  Might happen, but low odds of success.  I found some very fresh elk tracks one morning -- known to be fresh because a heavy snowfall had stopped only 30 minutes before I found the tracks and there was no snow in the bottom of the tracks -- and I followed these tracks for a long ways hoping to find the elk which was making the tracks.  The problem with this tactic is that it is pretty low chances that I can sneak up on the elk as they are making these tracks.

So, what general elk hunting tactics do you use with success?  FYI, this was my first elk hunting trip and I went solo.

The 257 Roberts Handi had to stay home.
« Reply #9 on: November 03, 2006, 05:41:27 PM »
Yesterday started our 4 time 3 day hunting season. The 25 Hunter had to do the shooting got three nice WT deer two does and a good 10 point buck. The 257R developed accurcy problems again and was left at home..

My friend got a doe and a nice buck. No pictures the camera froze up, battery was dead, it was miserable cold  with a wind blowing. I have two more mule deer doe tags but they have to wait till next week. Five deer in one day is not a bad bag for two old guys.

I gave the buck away to a friend that did not get one. Two does are more than enough for me and the wife. The other three deer if I get them will also go to needed friends.

Guys, I had to sleep in my hunting camp with long johns. The left over coffee in a cup froze over night. Not at all too comfi. Don't know cold it was, but colder than I like. I am glad I did not have to go hunting again today and tomorrow. Specially tomorrow on my 77th birthday.

I also have another WT doe Tag for up north. We fill that in the last week of November with the #3 Ruger 375 Winchester from a tree stand.

The 25 Hunter is a wildcat based on a 250 Savage it has the same power as the 257 Roberts. Both use 100 gr bullets. You can read about the 25 Hunter on my web site.

Navy Arms SA Revolver Bisley Model-quality-45 LC -maker?-parts availabity?
« Reply #10 on: November 08, 2006, 02:00:11 PM »
I happen to spot the Navey Arms Bisley in a gun shop out of state. As I could not buy the gun on the spot. I deciided to check out the reports on this replica handgun.
Do any of you own this gun? Who makes this gun?Are replacement parts and service avaialble and reliable?
Is this true case hardening or is this just a chemical case hardening color?
