early bow
« on: October 01, 2006, 01:43:57 AM »
Bow season started in The Northern Zone on Wednesday. Of course so did the rain.  I got out Wednesday and yesterday. Saw nothing Wednesday and yesterday saw 3 deer 2 nice does and a yearling.  They were way out of bow range. I will leave that spot pretty much alone until muzzleloading that starts in 2 weeks. My 14 year old nephew and I are going out tonight for his first actual deer hunt.  He is so pumped and so am I. Cant wait to get him out there

I had a doe and two yearlings come in to my stand opening morning.  Just as the big doe was about to step into my shooting lane, the wind swireld and she blew and took her kids with her.  This past weekend, the same group came in.  This time, the doe picked up my movement as I positioned myself for a shot.  Boy, this bowhunting game is tough!  I'll be back after them, though.  Good luck this fall.  I am enjoying every minute of it!

I think it's pretty cool to get pumped up when you're taking a young'n hunting!

I do the same thing. We've taken lots of first-time hunters out and been with them when they got their first deer!

I went out Friday evening, but didn't see anything within bow range!

Good luck to you!

well I got my nephew out on Monday evening. We got in my pop up blind and sat. We had deer about 20 yards, but for him with a 45 pound recurve and shooting no sights, he decided that was too far of a shot.  The deer as a decent doe.  I praised him for not taking an iffy shot for him. I just wish he would have got his head back and I would have taken her.  It was good to see her have no clue we were there.  I am going to purchase a 2 person ladder stand on Friday, so we can get up in the air and have a bit more room since it is crowded in my blind.

Well, I finally did it!  I took my first bow-killed whitetail.  I shot a nice, fat doe at 20 yards last week.  After several blown attempts, I feel like a weight has been lifted and my confidence restored.  What's more, the animal died within 30 yards of the shot.  I have had much longer bloodtrails with a firearm.  I am hopelessly addicted to bowhunting now!

Would you believe that I was alone and did not have a camera?  The weather was so warm and the carcass was getting covered in flies, that I had to skin and butcher right away.  I won't foreget it though!  SHe weighed 125 pounds and tastes great!
