.44 and lead bullets
« on: November 07, 2006, 11:05:06 AM »
Anyone shooting a lot of lead through their .44 Mag Handi?  I am getting ready to have one fitted to an extra frame I have, and would like to use heavy hardcast bullets in the 275-320gr variety.  How has accuracy been for you, and have you seen any considerable difference in group sizes with lead vs jacketed bullets?

I am surprised that someone hasn’t jumped on this one before now.  I have had little getting anything, cast or jacketed and I have tried a lot of combinations, to group satisfactorily in my .44 Handi.  There is some suggestion as to the type of rifling Handis have not being conducive to cast bullet accuracy.  I am sure as soon as I get this posted some will write in and say that their Handi shoots cast great, if so I am happy for you.  Mine doesn’t shoot hardly anything worth a shoot.  The .44 mag barrel is probably the least accurate barrel NEF makes.  Good luck.  My advice, get a 45/70 instead.

Read the other 44mag threads posted in the last week or so, pretty much everything there to be said about em.  ;)

Here's an old thread on using the .432" BTB bullet that they have on sale now.

Start with slugging your bore and find out what ya got. Lead is quite sensitive to a proper fit in the bore. The rifling type shoots cast fine, while I don't know how to post a link, a recently read a articel on how the micro groove barrel actually gives more driving surface. Makes a lot of sense. I've not ever had trouble with cast in microgrooves beyond a good fitting bullet. The 1:38 twist prolly won't stabilize anything heavier than 300 grains, but will do better than ok with that weight. Far as I'm concerned, a 270 grianer is the best compromise of weight and speed; after that you throw weight but don't gain in energy performance over the bullets flight, so extra weight becomes a bad trade. The 1:20 twist comes from revolvers where they increase twist rate to compensate for the short barrel.

Lots have complained of poor performace with 44 Handi's, mine was not an exception. It shot jacketed quite well but I had to do a lot of homework and range work to get to 1600 fps with cast, mostly due to bore size.

I have reamed mine to .445 SM, with either .44 mag. or .445 SM cases, I shoot several cast bullets, the Lee 240gr SWC GC is the best, but the 300gr RF GC works well, too.
I shoot the 240gr at 2050fps in .445 SM and the 300gr at 1900fps, no problems.
