Scopes and Mounts
« on: November 03, 2006, 12:55:14 PM »
After posting on a Rem. Mountain Rifle i`ve decided on a .270 and have it on lay-a-way as we speak. Now i`m in the market for a good scope and mounts for it. I have a Burris Fulfield II  3x9x40mm.  I need to hear your opinions on this scope and if it won`t work i`ll get another. So tell me what scope and mounts you folks are using for this rifle and caliber.  I`d like to set it up to shoot from say 50 yrds to 300 yrds. I would also like your opinions on ammo. I do reload but would also like to see what factory ammo is good for me. I can`t wait to get into shooting it. You folks had a lot of great things to say about the mountain rifle and sold me on it.

      Thanks To All,
             Burch  ;D

Leupold QRW Rings and bases----Hornady 140gn standard load. You should be good to go then.

I think your scope is a good choice and I liked the way the 140's worked in my .270.  As far as rings are concerned, I prefer the ugly Weaver bases and rings and I'll tell you why: When I go into the rough and remote, I don't take a back up rifle but I do take a back up scope.  The back up scope wears Weaver rings and has been mounted and sighted in on the rifle I'm using.  If the scope that's on the rifle goes south or gets hurt, a couple of twist on the thumb screws and I've got a replacement on the rifle that is within a slight tweak (if that) of being sighted in.

Leupold QRW are Weaver style---only they have quick detach levers instead of thumb screws---and are better made than anything Weaver ever thought about.

I nonticed the Leupold QRW`s have a low, med and high profile option. Of course the see through mounts wont work on my rifle since I have no sights ( personally I don`t like see through mounts anyhow )  But i`m wondering which one will work best with my Burris Fullfield II. I don`t know how high the mounting bar is so i`m not real sure what to select.

There you go, Omaha.  If it costs more its got to be better, right.........???  How are they better?  However, if they are Weaver clones, they'll work just as well.

I THINK you can get by with medium rings.  You are right.  You certainly don't need see thru mounts on your rifle.  Even if it did have sights.

I used the weaver rings and bases for 35 years with not a single problem. Can't say the same for a couple other types I've tried.Good service good price, although they have went up like everything else. The leupold QRW'S are nice as are the Burris zrings,so I guess copying is the best form of flattery.
The mediium should work.

I use the 140 grain Nosler Accubond in my 700 Mountain in 280 Remington. I dropped a pig with one shot in June with this pellet. I think that maybe 130 grain pellets may be better in a .270.

Val,have you shot any other game with the accubonds?Reason I'm interested is just started shooting them this summer the 150gr in 30-06 and they shoot great.Have used the partitions last 6 years and will be trying the accubonds for deer this year in about two weeks.

Can someone here tell me if a set of  LOW Talley lightweights would work on a Rem 700 BDL/ 3X9 Fullfield 1 inch tube, or must a guy go up to the MEDIUMS??

I know mediums will indeed work, but am wondering if anyone has gotten by with lows.

(Save your opinion about Talleys, that is what I am using)  ;D

I'm pretty sure the objective bell will fit in lows---my concern would be the bolt handle hitting on the other end.

bolt handle - ah yes, good point. Might have to take her in and test out both low & med
