41 XTP Performance
« on: November 08, 2006, 02:48:43 AM »
Just picked up a 657-3 PC 41 Mag Hunter with 6" ported barrel.  I now have three 41 mags...7.5" Redhawk and 11" Contender.  I am currently loading right at maximum with 296 and the 210 XTP and am curious about performance.

The Contender and 657 will be scoped while the Redhawk with shallow V and brass bead will stay with open sights.  I am curious about performance you have had with 41 XTPs on deer at various ranges/velocities.

If I am getting only 1200 fps out of the Smith [a guess...haven't shot it yet] will it perform at 100 yards on a deer if I have a great rest for such a shot?  I keep hearing that the XTPs need more velocity to expand and wonder if I should try the 170 GR JHC from Sierra in the shorter barrel so I will get some expansion out there?

Any other comments on 41 loads and bullets for various guns I would love to hear.  Feel free to PM me any load specifics.

Thanks.

Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

I don't hunt with a 41mag, a friend of mine does.  He using the 210 xtp and has great sucess with them.  If your not sure how fast or loads look at the Hornady reloading books.  They will tell you how at each load how many fps you have.  Mine friend loads at the brink of a hotload by their scale.  I can't remember, but I am sure he was using bluedot.

Can someone tell me what the Hodgdon magazinge/load book lists as a max load for the 41 XTP with H110.  If you could also tell me what barrel length/gun they are testing in and the velocity I would appreciate it.  I loaned out my Hodgdon load mag 5-6 months ago and forgot who I loaned it to.  I sholud buy another, but it bothers me to pay for one again!  Silly, huh!

Redhawk45,

What gun/barrel length does your firend use?  Has he shot deer or other game?

Thanks.

He has a ruger blackhawk with a 7 1/2 barrel.  He has taken a few whitetails with it other than that just paper.

rimfire, my Hodgdon's Annual manual list a starting load of 19.8 grs H110 for 1465 fps to a maximum load of 22.0 grs of H110 for 1631 fps with the Hornady 210 XTP out of a 10.125" barrel and using Winchester LP primers.  Hope this helps...RW

www.hodgdon.com   go to data and then to handguns or whatever.

when you have a question if you do a 'search' on the web you'll be surprised how much info' will come back at you.   just sort through it and keep what's good......

a 210 gr' XTP out of a .41 mag' sounds like surefire 'deer murder' to me.  i'd expect it to be capable of taking a very large specimen because of the bullets construction and its sectional density.

use Win' primers or magnum-rated primers in any other brand.....

good luck,

ss'

I use 23 grains of H110/WW296 (same powder different can) with any jacketed bullet from 200 to 220 grains. 26 grains when using the Sierra 170 grain bullet.

Hornady 210s run in the mid 1300s froma 5.5" barrel and over 1400 with a 6.5" Blackhawk.

Actual chrograph results:

210 Hornady/23 grains of H110

S&W M57 6":  1350 fps

Ruger BH 4 5/8": 1355 fps

TC 14": 1820 fps

Marlin 20": 1850 fps

170 grain Sierra 26 grains of H110:

5.5" Redhawk: 1536 fps

10" TC: 1875 fps

14" TC: 1980 fps

6.5" BH: 1650 fps

20 Marlin: 2050 fps

Either bullet into the lungs of a deer will be lights out..

Winchester..it is rated for Magnum or Standard loads. I figure since they are loading WW296 in factory rounds then the primer must work for ball powder. Also that way I only have to stock one primer for all loads...

20-21 grains of H110 with a Nosler 210 with a Fed 150 Primer is deadly on game, even wild hogs
