Skunk Smell
« on: November 10, 2006, 10:28:23 AM »
I caught a skunk in a foot trap.  I smelled the skunk long before I got there.  After skinning the hide smells.  Do I need to sanitize it before stretching?  How do you get rid of the smell?

One pint Hydrogen Peroxide  which i believe is 3% found in brown bottles in drug store for about 99cents ect.  1 cup baking soda, and tablespoon of dish soap.  Mix in container   soak   skunk hide in for a couple  hours,  take out let drip dry or mostly.  Put fan on  skunk hide  put on skunk stretcher ; wire or wood fur side out.  Take brush and lift up hair so it stands up so air can dry out.  When dry    if you havent fleshed yet flesh it and put on stretcher.  If you  put wet skunk hide on wood stretcher board , dont use that one as it absorbed water, take dry one.   You can use solution to clean your hands or tools also.  Do not keep solution when done throw away, DO NOT PUT IN A CAPPED CONTAINER; solution makes gas and  container can blow up as in taking cover off or rupturing container.   Anymore questions Holler... Good luck and go get them skunks, good money in fur, taxidermy, skunk quill and skulls.
