W C 852 powder
« on: November 11, 2006, 09:08:30 AM »
I have some W C 852 powder, made by Winchester, which is military surplus. The powder is in good shape, and would meter well through a powder measure.

I have partial data for .30-'06, but would like to know where I could bet loading data on this powder for other cartridges. A friend gave me this powder, and did some shooting with it with apparently good results.

I look forward to your response on this. I have another friend who is working up loads for a .243 with light bullets and am wondering if this powder would be suitable for this. I had some 4895 surplus powder years ago that worked terrifically in a .243.

I have a powder burn rate chart on my personal website and you can find that powder listed there.

Look for the link on the left sidebar for "Powder Burn Rate Chart"

The WC 852 is close to IMR 4831, just a tad slower. Look at the chart and compare the powders that are very close to it and that will give you an idea on where to start.

I have some of that powder (I sure wish I had purchased more than I did!) and it is lot#47287 (Slow lot).  I haven't seen it for sale in quite awhile.  I use 4831 data and have not had any problems.  I use it for cast bullet loads in cartridges where this slow of powder is not the most efficient, especially for jacketed bullets.  I can get a case full and still keep velocities less than 2000 fps.  The 30-30 and the 7-30 fall into that category.  I think it would be a bit too slow to use in the 243 with light bullets.  Good-luck...BCB

It would be about as good as it gets for someone loading a .270 with 130 grain bullets.
