8 ga blanks for starter cannon?
« on: November 13, 2006, 02:14:25 PM »
Anyone know a source for 8 ga blackpowder blanks? Also, do they have significantly more powder in them than the 10 ga blackpowder blanks? I would assume (and hope) more powder would give a bigger plume of flame from the muzzle and a louder bang?

My uncle has this awesome little breach loading brass starter cannon that we think was used as a starter cannon for yacht races. Anyway, he has a bushing in it that brings the chamber in it down to 10 ga. After we fired it on the 4th last summer, I have been hoping to find some 8 ga blanks and see some REAL fireworks next year.

Hello anchorman and welcome to the board,

Your Uncle probably has a fine circa 1890-1920 Yacht Cannon made by Strong or the R.H. Brown company. The 10 ga shells use 8 drams of black powder, the 8 ga shell 3” in length will use 10 drams of black powder and the 8 ga shell 3 ¼” in length will use 12 drams of black powder. You can order shell for your Uncle’s cannon from Dave Casey, "Rocky Mountain Cartridge LLC"' in Cody, Wyoming. He can also make you the special reloading kit necessary to load your shells. He has a web site. You will need to have when reloading, wads and cards for your reloaded shells. These can be purchased form another supplier called Track of the Wolf, Inc. located in Minnesota. They also have a web site. Search items WAD-08-C for the wads. If you cannot locate their information, send me a PM and I will forward their site addresses.

Good luck and happy shooting.  ;D  ;D  ;D

Welcome anchorman, glad to have you join us.

Are you saying your Uncle's signal cannon is 8 gauge and has inserts to use 10 quage blanks?

How about some pictures!

Send me a PM (email) for I have another source that can supply you with your

8 gauge blanks for $62.00/box of 25, or smaller lots. The shells are Remington hulls with

12+drams of powder, that they have loaded for them and are in stock for delivery.

If you have a chance, Post us a picture of your Uncles Yacht Cannon.

You gentleman  post up the the links to sources for the Signal Gun blanks. here in this post.  I will add them to the list next week.

Can't do it sooner, as I am headed out this morning for Ladysmith and the Annual Siege of Ladysmith Provincial shoot...rifles and pistols and such. The shoot is proceeded by three days of Tours of the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer War battlefields.  First tour this afternoon Majuba

And before one of you barracks room lawyers jump in here and call me for topic drift.  Muzzleloading artillery was used in those battles and I have started and ended my post talking about Signal Gun blanks.   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi all,

thanks for the answers.  I tried to post last night, but it doesn't seem to have come through.  I'll try and get some pics when I go up to se my uncle for christmas, but I make no promises, as I have too many hobbies, and not enough memory or time some days.

The cannon that he has has a hinged breech block that opens in line with the barrel.  has a pin that holds it closed IIRC.  I think he had someone turn a small bushing to go into the breach to change it from 8 ga to 10 ga, as he was having trouble finding 8 ga stuff here.  am I correct that 8 ga shotguns are no longer permitted in the US?  which would explain the difficulty in finding shells.

I tried to post a film of this little bugger going off, but those type of attachments are not uploadable here.

Cpt Ed,

I can't figure out how to send you a PM.  Do you have this setting turned off?  or is there something I am missing?
