Needing a youth 22 for my grandson.How does the marlin Y22 single compare to others?

I am not sure about the Marlin model you mention.  I have had a few Marlins and I certainly have nothing bad to say about them. I had three of their rimfires and they were good, solid, accurate guns, but with very stiff triggers.  I believe they were a 15Y (?) single shot, and a 781, 782(?) .22LR and .22WMR.  I swapped them off several years ago when I didn't think I "needed" them anymore. 
Now I have a nephew who is old enough to begin shooting and I recently bought him a Savage Cub to start out with.  What I like about the Cub:  Reasonably priced, good quality, Savage accuracy, comes with nice aperature sight, but also grooved for a scope (to be added later-maybe), Accu-trigger (adjustable, gives him a better chance to be more accurate, and is a very SAFE trigger mechanism), and the rifle is sized nicely for a younger shooter.  I also really like a single-shot.  I think it develops a better shooting mentality for a beginner.  Also, no magazines with a forgotten round left in them, etc.  I have been really pleased with the Savage Cub.  The Accu-trigger was a big selling point for me.  I also like NEF single shots as well - great triggers, very accurate, and safe.  Also youth stocks can be replaced with full size later if you wish, and other RF barrels could be added if desired.  All in all though, I would have to pick the Savage Cub.
One of the rewards of getting old (with all these aches and pains) is getting to get a rifle for a grandson. I hope you and he have a great time!

I'm not too familiar with the Marlin models mentioned here, but I like the single shots.  The NEF guns are great and very safe.  They  give you a good way to teach safe gun handling and shooting basics.  My first gun was a Marlin 60 and I worked for years to break the habit of point and spray.  The Handi-Rifles are pretty inexpensive and give you the option of adding barrels later if desired.

when they get ready, replace with a 5 or 10rd mag

I started out my kids with a Henry youth lever action for a couple of reasons. First I thought they might get bored quickly with a single shot. Second I figured a semi would be too fast for them to learn good shooting skills. Worked out pretty good. Now several years later they can both out shoot me in the prairie dog towns.   KN

I was given a rossi pump when I was about 5. Nice walnut stock. perfect size for a young person. My Grandfather had a friend of his engrave the side plates. I think he spent less than 300 dollars on the gun and the engraving. He taught me to hunt squirrels with that gun. 23 years later and that gun goes on the first squirrel hunt of the season with me. Out of all the guns I own and have ever owned The rossi is my favorite. It will be the gun I teach my daughters to shoot with and eventually hand down to them. Whatever gun you decide to buy make it special. Taurus carries a pump very similar but with better safties than the old Rossi.

I just had the chance to shoot one of the Rossi youth model combo guns this afternoon. This one was a .22 LR, .410 and I was impressed for how inexpensive the gun is. My 6 year old grand daughter wanted to shoot and this gun was available. Not a gun that is going to be handed down to generations to come, but for $100. with both barrels, hard to beat.
