30-30 scope
« on: November 10, 2006, 05:18:04 PM »
what is better to put on a 30-30 handi, a low power fixed or say a 3-9-40 or maybe even a shotgun scope?

Any would work fine, I have a 2½x20 Weaver on mine, it makes for a very light, quick handling brush gun.

I like the Leupold V-III 1-1/2-5X on a 30-30 but also the 3-9X too. Preferably something light.

I've got a bushnell banner on my 30-30 win. I think it's the best scope for the money! ;D

Yeppers.........I agree, 3-9x40's offered in 3", 4", and 6" eye relief with one even having a shotgun scope reticle. Can't beat 'em for the money and they really do pull in the light early and late.

My 30-30 has open sites. (upgraded but open)

But I have two others that I consider close range guns. One is my .357 MAXI the other is a 22" Bbl .45-70 GOVT. These both wear the same scope, a LEUPOLD VXII 1X4X20 SHOTGUN scope w/ heavy duplex reticule.

Excellent optics, plenty of eye relief and a great reticule. All from one of the best companies in the business.

I think it's important to match your scope to the type of hunting you plan to do. On my 30-30s I've used 2.5x and 4x fixed and 2x7. All will work well in the brush, but once in a while I will come across an open spot where the 2x7 is useful. (Especially when a nice muly runs across the field in front of me. At that time my mind goes from pan fried whitetail to BBQed muly real quick.)  I personnally have never found a need for as high as 9x on one of my 30-30s. Plus I like the more compact Burris or Leupold 2x7s over any 3x9.
