Browning Traditional Hunter misfires
« on: November 09, 2006, 04:11:12 PM »
Howdy,
I have a 38/55 1885 Browning Traditional Hunter. It routinely misfires. Makes for bad concetration.  The hammer frequently catches up on the first cock and stops short of hitting the firing pin. Sometimes it makes it to the pin, but must catch a bit since the primers are only slightly dented and don't fire. Has anyone else had this problem and have a solution? What is causing this to happen? Thanks for looking.

Marty

I don't have the parts diagram here but guns with set triggers have a part called a fly in the tumbler. If that's missing or damaged it can cause euch problems. If the is rifle doesn't have a set trigger the sear is catching the half cock notch.. Best bet on a newly made weapon such as yours is a call to Browning and a trip back to them..

Thanks Gunnut69.
It does not have a set trigger; still with factory single.
I had a good gunsmith friend of mine look it over. He had it apart/together several times; almost drove him crazy. He got it to work, but doesn't know why it did that. He did notice someone else had it apart at aone time. ???
I fired it later and it started to hang all over again.  ::)  He had contacted Browning, with not much luck. He gets another chance, and then I am going to pressure Browning if it doesn't work. I have several other '85's and they are fine. Hope Browning can fix it if required. If nothing else, replace parts until it works.
Life it too short for this stuff!
