sks for deer?

Have any of you guys ever used your sks for deer?  I got one in march, and was thinking it might be fun to shoot a deer with it.  After, of course, I've already got at least one on the meat pole.

The Speer manual says they recommend that the cartridge should be used on nothing larger than small deer.

If you re-load, you can use better bullets with some real knock-down power.  My SKS is accurate out past 300, and I have no doubt whatsoever that it will put any deer down inside 200.  100 yds with rifle sights would be more realistic though.  With a scope....definately 200.

Yes, actually, I have killed a 198 lb mulie doe with my SKS.  I was using the Pointed Soft Points.  If you actually compare ballistics of the 7.62x39mm round, it is not too far off of the .30-30.  The deer I killed never took another step from the heart shot at 50 yards.  It is a good little deer rifle.

They say the foot pounds are around 1500 thats not bad as far as accuracy my short barrel paratrooper will group 3" to 4" @ 100yds with my son shooting it and some shots were in the bull. I would trust it just place your first shot.                                             BigBill

I have two deer on my SKS, and I carry it as a back-up to my S&W M-29.

I would suggest you find a load that groups decently out of your rifle and go for it.

My first kill was with Win. softpoints and my second was with a russian hollowpoint ( the hollowpoint DID not open but tumbled badly and ruined a backstrap   :cry: )

btw, I tried scoping my rifle and couldnt get the scope to hold a zero so I use the issue open sights and it will group sub- 3 inches at 100 yds ( even better with the hollowpoints)

and as mentioned earlier, the 7.62X39 has ballistics very similiar to the 30-30 and noone ever claims that the 30-30 is only good to less than 50 yards, I would consider an SKS that groups well, to be capable out to 125 or so yards

hey redneckhuntr! just be sure you use good quality ammo when hunting with your sks. good quality soft point ammo, preferably new ameican made stuff. it will do the job. just remember that the sks shoots a 122 grn bullet where the 30-30 shoots a 150 or 170 grn bullet that is more heavily constructed and capable of better penetration under certain circumstances.  happy huntin!

I shot a few deer with a SKS,nothing over 90yards.My son has gotten a
few too.Its really a decent shooter at standing shots. 8)

since my original post to this thread I have added 3 more killed deer to my SKS.

I found that Wolf 154gr softpoints group really well out of my rifle.

Yes, you could use a sks for deer. Wouldn't be my first choice though. My cousin went deer hunting with a sks. The results from what I heard is that he didn't hit a single deer even though he shot many times. Just my 2 cents. Alec

Both of my sons have taken deer here in Florida with more or less stock SKS carbines, using factory soft point ammo (Winchester and Federal).
In my opinion a SKS will do anything a 30-30 will do, out to 100 to 150 yards.

Most of you guys bad mouthing the sks don't know what you are talking about. The sks is the fastest growing deer rifle in texas. I have never, ever lost a deer with my sks. With good ammo and a good sks rifle you have one heck of a good truck deer gun. I bet some of you guys dont recomend shooting deer unless you have a MAGNUM rifle.......... :D I do recommend that you use good ammo. Not the cheap russian crap.....

My experience in shooting a deer with an SKS is that I will Never do it again.  Now, I must preface that by saying not with Russian hollow point ammo.
I shot a big Kansas Doe, 240lb, at about 15yd.  first shot front chest, grazed the heart, second shot while running downhill broke back leg, last shot in the neck.  bullet disintegrated and I think would have run off and die latter without the second shot.  I only shoot coyotes with russian ammo.  I have purchased some American ammo SP, and may try that if opportunity knocks. 
But others around here have had same outcome, not just me, we shoot a lot of deer and the SKS just does not starch them, even the little ones, 150lb or so, with good shot placement, I think the animal deserves humane treatment and a quick end.  Hell, poachers use .22's and kill deer, but letting things suffer is not for me.  From what I have read the 7.39 round was developed to incapacitate and wound a man, not neccecarily kill, like the .223, and tax the resources of the enemy.  IMHO

To echo some already good advice, the SKS will take deer in the 100-150 yard range with no problem IF you use good quality comercial ammo. Good luck!

I second Tn Jim. The SKS is capabale of taking deer very easily if you use good quality softpoint hunting ammo.

I'm interested to know if the ones that said it wasn't a good deer round were using military ammo?

My dad uses his SKS for deer, he had taken about 10 deer with his,if he places the shot in the right spot and is within range it does a great job.  He uses hand loads with 123gr Winchester soft point bullets.  Teh SKS has replaced his old 94 that he used for about 40 years before he got the SKS.  Now he is looking a new Stainless Mini 30.

Excellent brush cartridge. From What I understand, the 123 grain
PSP-Bt actually surpasses the 150 grain 30-30 at about 140 yards
in retained energy.
