New 45/70 Handi user
« on: November 06, 2006, 05:21:39 PM »
I got a NEF Handi in 45/70 to use in the primitive weapon season, as this is a legal gun in Mississippi for primitive arms.  I put a Bushnell 4200 3 x 9 x 40mm scope on it.  Finally got a chance to shoot it some this weekend.  With the new Hornady Leverevolution 325gr ammo, I was getting 3 shot cloverleafs at 100yd off of bags.  I got one for my father-in-law and mounted a 3 x 9 x 40 Swift on it.  Same results of 3 shot cloverleafs.

I can't be more pleased with this set up.  This is the 1st time that I have ever shot a large bore as I have always been in the 7mm RemMag crowd, but this was pretty neat.  I liked hearing the muzzle blast when I shot and then immediately the sound of the big bullet busting that plywood target.  You don't get that with a 7mmMag.  Neat stuff.

Yup, everyone needs a .45-70 or 3, they're one of the most accurate calibers offered by H&R and one of the most popular because they're so much fun too!! :D

 Ace
I have family in Pearl River county.  My wife bought me a Buffalo Classic in 45-70 last year for Christmas and holy smokes do I love it.
I started out shooting factory loads and after a couple of brands my gun liked the Federal ammo the best.  It shoots less than a 1 inch group 5 for 5(if I do My job) at 100 yards all day.  I started re-loading because of it and now I am even more impressed.
One piece of advice, dont limit that gun to just primitive season.  You have one serious piece of great equipment use the devil out of it!
Have a safe and blessed hunting season.

Hey acearch.  I live in southwest Mississippi and I just got my 45/70 barrel yesterday.  I haven't shot it yet but I plan to sight it in tomorrow.  I hope I get the same results as you.  If so, I may use it all deer season.  I'll be using handloads and I have 3 different recipes to try.  What is the recoil like with these babies?  My last 45/70 was a 12 lb heavy barrel rem. rolling block.

keebo52:

It seems about like my 300mag.  Not to comfortable off of bags but not a problem offhand or off sticks.

I'm originally from North Miss about half-way between Jackson and Memphis.  Been living in S La for long time but still get back to my place up North when I can.  I really almost got the BC but finally decided on the Handi.  Sort of wish I had went with the BC, but I guess I probably need another one anyway.

:(Took my new 45/70 out to the range today and the best I could do at 100 yds was about 4 inches.  Guess I'll have to try the old O ring trick to see if it helps.  I also had 3 rounds FTF.  I had NEF lighten the trigger pull when I sent it in for the new barrel.  Hope this isn't the problem.

Remember, the transfer bar safety requires a full pull to the rear, a light trigger makes it easy to release it at the break, don't! See the Cleaning and Lapping link in the FAQ and Help sticky. ;)

I feel deprived I only have two 45/70s.  Love them both but the nod goes slightly to the 1895. ::)

I love my 45-70, and it shoots great as well. It hasnt (since I have owned it, got it used) seen factory ammo, nor will it. I like to reload for it and cast my own bullets. The load that I use is 12 grains of Unique under a 405 grain cast bullet. Its a pussy cat in the recoil department, and cheap to load at that.

Dont hesitate to  use it during regular deer seaon, remeber, deer aint bullet proof, and you dont need an earsplittinloudenboomer mag a numb to kill one. Many a buffalo have fallen to the 45-70, so I figure that a white tail aint got a chance.

Congrats on the 45/70!! I have a Buffalo Classic and love it :) What suprises me the most is that, that gun is considered for a Pimitive Season. Here in Pennsylvania, Primitive is considered a Flintlock, open sights and a roundball or maxis. Not even peep sights are allowed. Mississippi is very liberal on their Primitive season. Good luck on you hunt also :)Jack.

Yep.  The MS primitive weapon law changed last year to allow single shot rifles of a type designed before 1900 in 38 caliber and larger and scopes are allowed.
